Over Stretching

Recommended Posts

I've recently started a pretty intense stretching regimen to get rid of my hip tuck and to try fix my stuffed hip flexers.

I'm stretching about 4 - 5 times a week, sometimes twice a day. Along with rolling my ITB, quads, hammys, calfs and using a softball on my glutes 3 times a week.

I was just wondering if, like training, it's possible to over do it and loose even more flexibility? I don't mean over stretching as in pushing the stretch too far, I just mean stretching too frequently.

Any advice on this would be appreciated :)

Cheers

Static stretching before exercise has been shown to decrease strength so I'd stick with dynamic stretched if you're doing them before exercise.

With your static stretching be sure to do some isometric stretches to ensure you maintain the strength with the improved range of motion. This is generally just tensing the muscle while under stretched conditions.

I've been told by my physio and sports med specialist that the fastest and most effective way to improve your flexibility will be to perform the set of stretches 2-3 times per day, everyday.

Just to add a tidbit of information to this, you probably are familiar with the sensation of a bit of shaking in the limb being stretched especially with the hamstrings. Avoid this, reduce tension just as much as needed to stop the shaking.

whats the shaking a sign of? Happens to me when I get close to failure on a final set of stiff-legged deadlifts

My legs shake a little even in my warm up sets with really really light weight on leg extensions, squats I don't have any issues. Always wondered what it was caused by.
