Should I compete?

Hey, little background on me, 17 years old, use to be obese (106kg), trained for two years not to be ;d.

Auckland resident

I'm currently 71kg, about 13% - 13.9% bodyfat

My lifts:

90 kg Bench

140kg dead lift (done with ease, so most likely I can do higher)

70kg Squat

Pretty sure I still have enough fat to drop down to 66kg / ripped.

Do I have any potential in the sport is what I'd like to know :)

Thanks!

What we need is pics.

Didn't realise powerlifting was aesthetically based...

Your bench and deadlift are very good for your age and weight, but what's up with your squat? If you could bring that up a bit I'd definitely give competing a go. It'd be worth giving at least one comp a go even if you're not going to win, just for the experience and to find out if it's for you or not.

Have a look through this website; http://www.nzpowerlifting.co.nz/cms/home especially the rules, and results section to check out how much others in your class are lifting.

As Phedder said by all means give it a go. You don't have to compare your lifts against anyone else's lifts, just against your own.

You'll meet experienced guys who can help you work on your technique and it's loads of fun.

Judging from your deadlift I'd say there's heaps if room to move on your squat too, sounds like you just need technique tweaking and time under the bar

theres no reason as to why you should not compete. yes there are plenty of strong mother fuckers at power lifting comps that lift ridiculous weight but there are also a lot of weak guys that go along for fun and the buzz of competing infront of a crowd. your young so if you start now you have years ahead of you so dont see whats holding you back. get a good trainer that has competed/knows what their talking about and you'll be set. you should talk to BarBrother as he got silver at Oceania and is competing at the worlds this year-i think hes doing a fundraiser with another member of his team focusing on a squat workout this should help you out heaps.

Agree with the comments above, just get ready for your first comp, I would not dop any weight as you may lose some of the strength that you already have. Just get stronger and see how your weight goes.

Yeah squat is pretty low. Mostly because I been cutting / recomping for 10 months, and I neglected squats for my legs to once every 2-3 weeks for more cardio.

Took cardio pretty seriously, hiit, sprinting etc instead of weightlifting. When I started I was barely able to walk with a quick pace for 10 minutes.

I'm not worried about strength loss as I cut down to sub 11%. As long as I stick to cardio after weightlifting and eat right, my genetics won't let me louse an ounce of strength :)

Thanks for all the advice, i'll see where I can take myself strength wise as I keep losing weight and look to compete sometime in future maybe.

Haha no pics untill i'm sub 11 :) And yeah routine has been mostly bodybuilding-like with a mixture of plyometrics / jump rope.

I think you should compete.

What you can do now does not matter...

Competing will give you the oportunnity to gain some 1st hand experience.

To meet some great people who are involved in the sport.

Learn about your self and your needs as an athlete and at your age (and training age) progress will come fast...

Eat healthy and train smart ... good things will come of it!

It might just be my eyes - but I believe Ange Galati is pretty bloody shredded for a powerlifter.

Sifo is on fire. Good stuff. Fortunately powerlifters are not quite as sensitive. Powerbuilders are another story.
