Hahaha, dear god, I admit an inner feeling and get ripped on by pseudo macho macho meeeeen. The irony is most 'macho' men are likely to be more feminine inside than the guys who they rip on.

"You can tell a macho, he has a funky walk

his western shirts and leather, always look so boss

Funky with his body, he's a king

call him Mister Eagle, dig his chains

You can best believe that, he's a macho man

likes to be the leader, he never dresses grand"

Yeah I hear ya real dudes cry themselves to sleep at night thinking about kittens.

So you're macho and gay jimjim? Hows that working for you? You give and make others take? "Macho machooo maaaaan".

Nice one blue bird of depression.

I don't wanna know.

Maybe your depression is caused through repression of your sexuality? Dont knock it till you have tried it. Its like the depression fad everybody is getting on the bandwagon and trying it.

If you go out to the woods tonight, you will find a magic clearing where bluebells grow and bluebirds sing. There you will find the most wonderful bubbling hot spring surrounded by hot mist, a natural sauna. I'll be the well toned ballet boy with pink spandex dipping my feet. Be sure to give a limp wristed wave so I know its you jim jim.

Seems like everybody on here is a boo hoo betty.

If you spent more time chasing ass and lifting weights instead of crying like a baby on the net your life might be more fulfilling

As chopper would say, "HARDEN THE f*ck UP".

and also, people with diabetes should harden the f*ck up too. It's just insulin, you weak fuckers.

thanks dr Jim.

Depression in many cases is people needing to pull their socks up and get on with life drs can just prescribe meds because someones feeling a bit blue. Anti depression medication is like ritalin over prescribed. Its a fad illness. Sure its a real thing for some but far too many people are diagnosed and use it as a crutch and too many people are on medication for depression when what they really need to do is get off their arses and stop feeling sorry for themselves.

Diabetes is different without insulin you die. Its a stupid comparison. physical illness verses mental.

I guess the thing is a lot of people let things overcome them and it's basic weakness. For every person who can't cope with shit cos his mrs left him or he got so fat he has to take medication to stay alive.. there's a million who take control of their lives and just move forward and fix their shit up without asking everyone to feel sorry for them.

Brain = nervous system. It's hard to define the difference between a mental illness and a physical one. Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression etc are all to do with how a persons brain, aka nervous system works. So to say a mental illness and a physical illness are different things is inaccurate. It's a combination of environment, genetics and the general outlook someone has on life that influences disorders like depression. I do agree medication is prescribed all to easily but that's a flaw in the medical healthcare system itself. First line treatment should be cognitive behavioral therapy second line if that's not proving effective should be adding in medication alongside therapy.

One factor that is missing here is the effect long term life conditions have on brain seratonin regulation and cognitive behaviour patterns. For example, a person who has had particularly terrible conditions growing up, such as parental illness or death, personal disability or illness, physical or sexual abuse etc, these things affect brain functions and thought patterns. It's not simply a matter of 'getting over it' or hardening up.

While your comments may seem logical to you, they ignore the fact that clinical depression is a mental illness. This means that it is NOT just a trivial problem wherein someone is feeling a bit too sad. It means that they are physically (yes, JIM you moron, your brain is a physical object), not able to have normal thoughts.

These types of comments are actually one of the biggest obstacles to people getting treatment for this illness.

I absolutely agree, and to the caveats on caution before medicating as well. IN fact, my complaint about NZ mental health system was that too much focus was on meds and little attention paid to things like diet - which in my case was a factor.

Some people have brains naturally wired for a low "happiness setpoint". See the hedonic treadmill.

As mentioned there is no fine line between mental and physical illness. The mental happens as a consequence of underlying neurological processes. There are some instances where "sucking it up" can translate to improvement (and altered function in the brain; see cognitive therapy again), but by and large this won't be a meaningful solution for someone with clinically-diagnosed depression.

Its hilarious to see that people like jimjim and harryb think depression is like being in a bad mood for an hour, and that people should just get over it and move on.

There are many many forms of depression which can involve/lead onto other mental illnesses (comorbidity).

If you're feeling messed up for a long long time in your head that to me is worse than something physical at times. If this depression is dictating how you feel than it will affect your entire life.

My stepfather was exactly like people like jimjim, he thought everything was black and white and didn't beleive in mental illnesses, which is ironic as hes the most miserable bastard I've ever met to live with and we all know he suffers from some type of depression but he wont admit to it.

And I'm not asking for pills...if anything...i would avoid them if I could. I just want to seek some kind of therapy and its helpful to talk to people who are not small minded and who are helpful.

If my 'manly' points have been deducted, then so be it. We all know that our state of mind determines our output to others etc.

 I admire you for seeking help, it must've been hard to start this thread.

My only suggestion is to talk to somebody who specialises with depression 'cos it sounds like this has been eating at you for a long time. Other than that, have learnt quite a bit from this thread.
