Depression makes me run, and run

I dont want to sound like a pussy, or get sympathy here, but i get so f*cking depressed that I go running at about 2am or some stupid time in the night. I cant even get any peace in my sleep. The only thing that numbs the self loathing and confusion from the depression is to run as far as I can until I feel better.

At work, when I can, I'll go to the toilets and do as many press ups as I can, until I drop to the floor out of breath.

I don't want to see some twat shrink or have counseling, I find talking to people just doesn't help, so I work out like a freak and sweat that malaise out of my wretched system.

It just always comes back. I think its my past that haunts me and f*cks my head up, but I cant stop thinking about it.

Bro you should see a doctor at the least. If you are having these troubles regularly then there maybee something wrong and he may be able to help. They have mild anti depressants and all sorts of things that can help you these days. If you are not sleeping etc then thats just doing you harm in the long run. Either way turning a blind eye to the problem wont make it go away. Take that step and see a doc bro.

Exercise is one of the best things you can do to help you feel better but if the problem is persistant you should talk to someone about it. Even copy and paste what you have written here and email it to a doctor.

The potential problem with the exercise only solution, is the issue of injury.

ie. you get injured, can't exercise, then what? You're half way there mate if you can talk about on here

Absolutely. Respect mate. But I agree with others, you need to see someone. Even try hypnotherapy to get the root of your issue and deal with it head on. I know it sounds a bit whacky but I've known someone to use it to deal with anger. Have a think about what you are also taking at the moment (supplements etc?) which might be enhancing the problem.

Good luck.

I really think this is more common than folks will admit to....

The Depression website has some good ideas.

Training hard can affect how you feel, both positively and adversely, as it accentuates any details of diet. There's a linkage between serotonin and melatonin (prescription-only in this country, unfortunately) which is of relevance to anyone who trains hard.

A decent doc will give you good advice, which need not involve serious meds unless they're really called-for.

One piece of advice I was given was to consider a magnesium supp - magnesium citrate for preference - to help with moods. Either a straight Mag citrate, or even ZMA, might be worth you researching to see how it fits for you.

Good luck

Well you are barrel of fun.

Forget medication and shrinks.

The only way to truly cure any illness it to accept Jesus into your life.

Kablah or something wacky like that

I think the real issuse with this case of depression is as he stated something in his past.

Gonna have to face up to it, confess whatever get it off your chest and try and make amends.

BUT you rarely can change the past, it happened, get over it move on.

Dwelling on it won't solve anything.

yeah i know this is a simplified statement and it may not be so easy.

But in the long run drugging yourself if only mildly is only a sticking plaster on the problem.

Bro, agree with many things listed above.

There are a number of things. First thing to acknowledge, you are not alone.

It seems these days nearly every second man and his dog has been through it, or knows someone that has.. and there is a away through.

Number of options available for treating this.. PLEASE be OPENMINDED .. because there are so many avenues to explore

1) problem shared, problem halved!- Talk therapy helps... and it doesn't have to be a counsellor, psychologist etc Just a good mate, someone you trust so you can get an action plan together. Surrounding yourself with positive people helps. Support networks are key. ( btw I rate hypnotherapy!! )

2) obviously there is the option of meds, but don't dismiss alternative therapies ( meditation, relaxation) or remedies ( supplements such as vitamin b, magnesium, 5-htp, st johns wart, fish oil etc..talk to a health prof)

3) Exercise- Great! It gives you a sense of relief and that's huge. some people in the darkest spaces can't even get a moments relief. Keep it consistent ! it's so healthy for you

4) rest and repair

5) Do your best to maintain a healthy balance- eat well, rest and allow yourself down time for recovery

6) TRUST this WILL PASS!!!! it does!!!

7) It may seem a mish and a half, getting through each day.. but set yourself realistic goals, even if they are set on a 'day by day basis' Routine is good for the mind

8) There are a number of high profile, inspirational peeps online ( and other awesome everyday people) who have been through depression and come through the otherside.. read up on their experiences and how they got through and see if you can apply any of their stratagies?

Hang in there mate! look at the responses you've had! people are already offering you advice to start tackling things!

Don't sacrifice sleep ay, do what you need to get a good nights sleep in.

Lack of sleep and running at night would be doing who knows what to your hormones and possibly making it worse. Go to your Dr about your sleep and depression issues, why wait for it to get worse. I've had a few friends that have depression, all with sleep issues. You wanna start dealing with it now before you become reliant on meds or before the problem gets worse/out of control.

Gotta agree with cara too, talking with someone (doesn't have to be a shrink) is gonna be your best bet to deal with it on a day to day basis.

Everyone will suffer from some sort of depression at some stage in their lives, the difference is the people who get past it are the ones who acknowledge it and address it. Your halfway there.

Best of luck

Thanks for the response guys, much appreciated. I've had depression all my life pretty much, but never dared talking to anyone about it apart from a few understanding mates (who were miserable bastards like me too lol) and never took pills for it.

I will definitely give hypnotherapy and the non-drug remedies. My personal way of 'escaping' from depression is to watch a shit load of movies or listen to some chilled out Tom Waits.

And great I will check that depression website out.

I think thats wht I never bothered telling people apart fro ma few mates about ym depression because I felt like I was being a poofter (no offense to gay men I'm not homophobic lol), and had nothing to complain about as there were other people much worse off. Plus I felt embarrassed as shit the next day if I told someone how I felt over a few beers lol.

But this has been a life long thing for me so I should do something about it I guess.

No but it will bloody well help me sleep in a bolt up right position thats for sure, I know from experience! The only trouble is if they dont have the neck supports and you're awoken by a disgruntled passenger next to you, whos not happy you've used their shoulder as a pillow and drooled all down them lol.
