Powerlifting gear advice please

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am going to compete in my first competition in July 23 at Auckland Novice comp. Since gear is allowed, I thought I might as well use it. I have never used any gear except chalk and that was only once for my 150kg max deadlift.

I am 66kgs, 171cms tall, 17 years old and my one rep max is squat 110kgs, bench 82.5kgs, deadlift 150kgs. There's video of me lifting in Lifting Videos.

I was reading on the Net and a Titan Fury seems like a good choice for a bench shirt. As for a squat suit, I was thinking of the Inzer Z. Do I need a seperate DL suit or can I just use my squat suit to pull? What's a good choice for knee wraps and belt? I have been lifting in socks as I only have running shoes. I was going to buy Converse Chuck Taylors. Are they a good choice? Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, can someone give me an idea of price? Where can I purchase the gear for the cheapest price?

Thank you very very much!!!!

By gear, I thought you meant roids. You're only young, don't worry about suits. Just find yourself some chalk and maybe some knee wraps. Try Bodybuilding.com. Although you have to get that shipped over and paid via card, it'll be worth it.

As mentioned might be best to ease into using equipment Tom. To get the most out of it you need time to train in the equipment. Wraps and a belt might be a good a option for the first comp as there will be a lot of things to think about and it will be a steep learning.

If you are lifting in a NZPF comp then you will need approved wraps so ones from bb.com probably won't pass. Any titan, Inzer, Metal or APT wraps would be good. I will message you some details.

Good luck

Given that you're new to all this, I'm with the others. Don't worry about gear yet, and preferably not for another year or two (minus belt and maybe knee wraps). Adding gear too early in the process does more harm than good IMO.

Totally agree with BB and PMan, you should spend 18 months training to train (belt and Knee Wraps) then the next 18 months Training to Compete maybe a Bench Shirt 3rd year a Squat suit.

You have to develope good technique and get strong first, Equipment changes things and takes a while to master, most lifters are not ready physically for the loads that come with Equipment.
