NZIS: Yay or nay?

Hey everyone.

My younger brother (he's 21) is quite keen on doing the Personal Training Certificate at NZIS here in Christchurch (even I'm tempted!). Is this a good entry level course for someone who's interested in making a career in the personal training/sports coaching field and has been out of school for a while or are there better options?

Any thoughts most welcome!

if you have half an idea about training just go to the shortest possible course... get the bit of paper thats all it is.... be a gym instructor for a while learn the gym culture learn to interact with members then when u have confidence get clients and go from there. u will learn most of the stuff relative to your earning in the gym working not on a course.. spend time learning about nutrition if you have good knowledge in nutrition you can assist your clients with this and if they follow your instructions their best results will come from the nutrition advice and this is how you will get ahead from others, your clients will be gettign results.... other peoples wont.

nzis... doesnt matter do any one!

I did the PT course at the Manukau NZIS back in 2006. Was good fun! Being only 5 (or was it 6??) months, it only scratched the surface of most topics to be fair. But I think it depends alot on your tutors, 'cos ours was awesome. I did the course 'cos it was around then I started training seriously at the gym and wanted to know more about different types of training and whatnot.

But the others on the course had no problems finding jobs as PTs afterwards shrug.gif

It's not the people have difficulty getting jobs and PTs it's that they have difficulty making money because they don't know how to sell to other people.

Personal training is all about sales, training people is the easy part. Its a good idea to work as a membership consultant in a gym to start with - if you can sell a gym membership you can sell personal training.
