How to compete in powerlifting

Hi, I am 17 years old, 18 in August. I weigh 66kgs, 171cms tall and my raw one rep max are squat 110kgs, bench 70kgs, deadlift 110kgs. Those were taken about a month ago with no gear (no belt, no wraps, no suit). I would like to compete in powerlifting.

So my question is, with my lifts, would it be worthwhile to enter or am I too weak? Also, I live in Rotorua and I have no idea how to enter a powerlifting competition. Do they have Junior divisions and weight classes? Are you allowed to wear gear? Any information would be great.

Nice raw numbers. I think if you are keen to get into powerlifting then you should go for it, definitely good to get some experience under your belt. Yes they do have age classes. You would be a sub junior which goes up to 18 years old then you move into under 23's. There are 8 weight classes for me: 59, 66, 74, 83, 93, 105, 120 and 120+.

Just focus on getting that raw strength up at the moment and get your feet wet at a novice event.

I would be keen to give it a shot aswell ive done a few novice bench comps, won a couple, My max squat is 230kg and bench 160 could prob pull a 200 deadlift but havnt really trained deadlift much, worthwhile competing or am I to heavy? im 97 kg at the mo but would prob be around 102 to get those lifts

The great thing about powerlifting is that it is easy to compete. Those numbers are awesome for a novice. Give it a crack.

Hi, just giving an update.

I competed in my first powerlifting comp on yesterday which was the 23rd July 2011. The competition was the Auckland Novice 3-lift comp. There were 13 lifters. It cost $20 to enter.

I weighed in at 65.9kgs so just made the U66kgs and I was 17 years old so I went in the U66 Sub junior division.

These were my lifts:

Squat (Knee Wraps and Belt)

Attempt 1: 120kg WWW

Attempt 2: 130kg WWW

Attempt 3: 140kg WWW (10kg PB)

Bench

Attempt 1: 80kg WWW

Attempt 2: 85kg RRR

Attempt 3: 85kg RRR

Deadlift (Belt)

Attempt 1: 140kg WWW

Attempt 2: 150kg RWW

Attempt 3: 160kg WWW (10kg PB)

Best Squat = 140kg, best bench = 80kg, best deadlift = 160kg

Total: 380kg (20kg PB)

You get three attempts at each and there are three judges, of which at least two must give you white lights to get the lift. I won my class :D by default, I might add since I was the only one in my division hee hee.

Like I said, it was my first comp and I really enjoyed it so I will definitely be competing again. Don't be worried whether you're strong enough, powerlifting needs more competitors anyway. You're competing against yourself. If you lift more the next time, you're a winner. I encourage anyone else to just give it a go, read up on the Internet about powerlifting rules so you don't make any silly mistakes.
