Is doing Only Squats ok?

groovy

Recommended Posts

Hi all, Lots of posts on here about squatting and not squatting and all.

So i was wondering, what i am currently doing is waste of time or any good?

Training for strength in general.

For legs i only do squats. Until i cant breathe and squat anymore.

front squats, box squats and back squats.

30sets (10 of each for above), about 4-6reps. Finish off with dropsets and with as many reps i can in last few sets.

Is this ok? Or do i need to do some leg extensions and other accessory work?

cheers.

You're gonna get a few different opinions on this, so prepare yourself!

Mine is: doing a variety of different squats like you're doing will be fine, just make sure everything is done properly, and you're targeting all areas as intended  If you train at the intensity you say you do, then even better!

I'd maybe throw in some specific calf work, but IMHO anything else is probably unnecessary for general strength training.

If squats are *it* though (heck, even if they weren't), I'd suggest you make sure you're doing some mobility/flexibility/stretching as well. I'd probably also throw in some sled drags/prowlers (personally) just for the different type of leg conditioning/general strength, but that's just my preference.

Just my opinion :)

Thanks for the input drizzt. well i do take like 90mins for that workout. So its not really that intense as you put (but im trying).

Also in that sets only the last 4 or 5 are working sets, others are warm up. But i do count them.

No way i can do 30sets working sets, but that would be awesome :)

I get enough calf work out when i walk up/down the stairs at the office :)

I do the Agile 8, 2 times a week for the flexibility.

I would loved to do some sled and other GPP, but no facility at my gym :(

lol at walk up and down the stairs at the office, must be one of the genetic calf brigade. If not you better start training them.

I reckon that squats are enough for your leg development, I would say do a high bar relatively narrow stance squat though. Or if you are doing a lower bar wide stance back squat then doing front squats with it will hit your whole leg adequately. Once you have some mass then you might find you need to throw some other things in to even up areas which aren't being hit but you also might find that just those movements are enough for what you want to achieve.

Thanks Harry. I know i should, but i always slack off with calfs and usually dead by the time im done with the squats. I will try and do it on other days with chest or back.

And no genetics here, still a stick.

I generally do high bar and feet little bit wider than the shoulders, so i can try and go deep. I have noticed that i cant go deep enough if i go really wide, could be a flexibility issue though.
