Feeling your lats

Recommended Posts

Hi all:

I am looking for some advice re getting bat wings. I am achieving good shoulder growth but my lats are not growing at the same rate as shoulder width and thus starting to get a bit narrower.

I find it hard to isolate lats, which is atypical for me.

Can anyone suggets tips and good exercises to really bring those lats out?

Main thing for "feeling" your lats is pulling with your elbows as opposed to your hands

This. When your pulling you need to think of your hands as hooks, also with pulldowns ect try to pull in a straight line from top to bottom keeping your elbows in line with your hips

Drop the weight in all your rowing and pulldown exercises, and concentrate on a quality rep with an exagerated squeeze of the shoulder blades each and every rep, hold the squeeze for a couple of second on each rep, when it feels like you cant squeeze anymore try to squeeze even further.

To feel the lats isolated start doing 5 to 10 sets of straight arm pulldowns, getting a stretch in the lats at the top of the movement by bending forward and pulldown using your lats until the bar touches your upper thighs, as you stand up straight, contract the lats hard.

As peter and twl mentioned pulldown with your elbows concentrating on the back pulling the bar down with no arm action,

some people that are very hand dominant find imagining pulling the bar down with their pinkies does the same trick.

Using straps where you can relax your grip also does a great job of helping you feel your back do the work...

Never thought of that, great idea.

For pulldowns I like to pull with my two middle fingers, and focus on keeping my chest high, which like everyone has been saying, helps relax the grip, gets the shoulder blades closer together and shoulders back.

Never thought of this before' date=' have been struggling with lats for a while.

Thanks PD, Will try to focus on it tonight![/quote']

Also concentrate on using your lats, try build up that mind/muscle connection. Should be easy using bobsta's method of squeezing cause you should definitely feel them
