Can someone teach me how to count calories?

As above... This is an effective way to decrease fat yes? by getting on top of your food servings etc?

I'm just guessing with my food intake at the moment which is probably dumb. Either that or does anyone know a good nutritionist I can consult?

google calorie counters on google... itll give u rough estimations of calories per servings of majority of foods... then u just add them up urself. these are for foods that dont come with a label already such as avocados or tomatoes for example... all other stuff u buy from supermarket u can add up yourself from the label, most will be in kilojoules (kJ) so u can convert these to calories by multipliying the number of kJ by 4.184 to work out the amount of calories.

Pretty sure Tom meant DIVIDE the kilojoule amount by 4.182, not MULTIPLY lol.

But yeah Tom summed it up well

You'll need to keep a food diary, and write absolutely everything you eat including condiments etc. Then you can work out how many Calories per day you are consuming and what your maintenance intake is.

If i'm not training specifically to become a bodybulider, how necessary is it to count calories? I want to train well and eat well, but it really does seem like a lot of work...

its a waste of time.. i go more on types of foods and serving sizes and mirror... this is a much easier way of doing things. unless of course your really serious.

okay thanks for the advice, is google a reliable aid for working out how much your reccomended calorie intake should be?

google is a search engine to find websites, there are plenty of websites providing calorie calculators for u to choose from and/or compare

i consider how many grams of protein carbs and fats im getting from each meal, though i dont count the total/my daily caloric intake. i recommend that you do if you have a precisely planned caloric intake.

i count calories different to tom, i will read the grams of protein, carbs and fats then multiply them by 4, for protein and carbs; and by 9, for fats.

http://nutritiondata.self.com/ is a good start to find out how much or little you are eating. But first you need to calculate how much you need to be eating.

this is a great site, i always use it, but purely out of interest for nutritional value.

1+1=2

1+3=4

1+4=5

I think that you get the idea. Before anyone picks on me I used to count points with weight watchers. But its easy to add the number up. I would not worry too much about counting calories, but look at you macros and make sure that you are eating enough...

Quality food>Macros>GI>Calories

Thats how I prioritize for weight loss and gain.

The more you play with cals the more the body picks up on it and tries to balance out. For weight loss, the lower you drop cals the lower your metabolism will burn, just making it harder to lose weight at a reasonable rate. Keeping the intake of quality foods high means that your metabolism still runs high and the good foods your eating will burn cals by digestion.

Low cal can mean crappy workouts too

Macros: of course get your whole food proteins, low gi carbs and quality fats. For weight loss, high protein low/moderate carb has historically always worked for most

Once thats all in line, play with calories.
