well Lyoto Machida's main style is Karate (although he does a bunch of other martial arts...including sumo)

Kyokushin Karate is pretty useful IMO but I am not sure how would a pure Karate person do if they put them in a cage in an MMA fight (with MMA rules).

As someone who does Judo I reckon judo fighters can do well in mma, but they need to train strikes since modern judo bans any form of strikes (and no leg submissions)

I agree, but shit we have some nasty habits from judo that are hard to fix...

Karate like many other martial arts has flaws too, can't clinch or grapple.. As they say 100% of the fights start standing and 99% of them end on the ground

I used to do karate and thought it was above all.

I do think MMA is a very strong fighting style (or combo of styles) but look at it this way. A boxer vs a MMA figher.. If you took a left hook to the head from David Tua would you then beable to grapple him? Chances are you the receiver would be out cold on the ground.

Comes down to the individual i rekon. All fighting styles have their merits and weaknesses. MMA is cool... So are traditional fighting styles

Obviously if a MMA fighter fought under boxing rules they would lose, no doubt about that.. But theres no way in hell David Tua would win an MMA fight either!

The beauty of MMA to me is that it is as close to a streetfight as you will get in any fight sport.

What about no rules? because a MMA fighter would not win under karate rules VS a master.

Its hard to tell but MMA is a good allrounder. I do rate it

lol you're wrong there, modern MMA has the rules watered down (UFC etc) compared to the olden days of vale tudo (Pride FC etc) where you could soccer kick people in the head, stomp their heads etc

The real beauty of proper MMA fighters is that they can fight both long and short range which is crucial in any street situation

well it is sort of close to a straight fight but I do agree with Rookie...pride had funny rules where you could soccer kick the crap out of the other dude, but couldn't elbow them on the ground (or knee them in the head... check out Mark Kerr Vs Igor when he got kneed but the ref didn't see it lol)

the real deal no rules was early UFC when only biting and hair pulling were not allowed (gouging was a grey area since you could submit the other dude with your chin in his eye socket) ... Remember when Hackney punched the shit out of Joe Son's balls ?

Elbows are allowed now but you can't do a downard elbow has to be a 90 degree one....man all this talk got me fired up for Diaz of Daley tomorrow...should be a good fight (would be a crack up if Diaz koes Daley)

ps. for anyone that trains MMA in NZ, what is NZ's wrestling like? watching international fighters vs americans you can notice that almost all of the time the americans have superior wrestling with better take downs/take down defence (as long as they're not facing GSP)

Bro I want Daley to take it, love his striking man- damn animal he is!!!!

The reason why you see most of the US guys with good wrestling is because they have it at high school and Uni (NCAA)...

NZ does have good wrestlers however they don't seem to get involved in MMA, that seems to be the part lacking the most in NZ MMA fighters from what I've seen. Judo and BJJ are the most common with "basic" wrestling skills- shooting, single leg takedowns etc..

Well what current fight sport is closer to a streetfight then?

No rules? Whoever has the gun I suppose.. Mind you someone will probably say theres a martial artist who can dodge bullets too.

Vale tudo, Rio Heroes in Brazil- not really mainstream because of the content/brutality of it....

Something like Japanese Ju jitsu would be/and is a lot closer to a street fight than MMA... you are allowed to headbutt, eyegouch and everything else in sparring

They can both strike, if it goes to the ground then Diaz for sure... but if it ends up being a stand up battle then Daley FTW

If any Karate was gonna beat up an MMA fight would have to be Kyokushin. its just kickboxing in a gi lol.

As for Style vs Style, who ever is more athletic and or deceptive/unorthodox gots the upper hand. And at 5min rounds it all ends up the same form of martial art anyway :pfft:

I don't personally Like MMA, so boring. Every fight invariably ends on the ground where its just a yawn fest of two guys trying every sexual position under the sun.

yeah I see your point, tried to get some of my mates into it and it just happened that most of the ppv that they watch was a wrestler smothering the other dude...when he had him in a north/south position they decided to pack up and leave lol.
