Pre comp rituals

interested in hearing what some of the members do mentally on the eve of battle ( day before) a meet or a BBing comp. 9/10 new/novice people go into a comp high strung on nerves etc then go in and miss calls from judges, screw up posing routines.

Personally for me i like to watch afew inspirational speeches and lifts on youtube and i usually go to sleep with my ipod in my ear Blasting heavy metal or just go over visualizing my lifts and setups

I try to take it easy on the last week leading up......stay out of gym etc try to do other stuff, and leave the hype up for the day. That way I'm getting ratty & scratchy and cant wait to lift.

A friend of mine bans himself from all forums & anything to do with the sport for that last week! Each to their own.

Just prior I like the music thing (metal mainly) and old strongman videos (mainly Kaz, JPS, Jouko etc). I also like to think of those people I'm representing when I'm competing - family, friends, training crew etc. Usually when it comes time to lift I'm so hyped I'm almost in tears! LOL

Watching Pumping iron! I usually watch it before any big events I have - it's come out before a couple of rugby games in the past couple of years, and watched it on the morning of my Powerlifting comp last month. Favourite part of it for me is watching Lou Ferigno doing those overheads in the dirty basement gym, yelling; "ARNOLD" with each rep. Determination to succeed is what comes across to me here.

Another part of it is Ed Corney squatting while Arnold spots - Ed struggles to get to the 9th rep of a 10 rep set (I think?) and Arnold says "Ok 3 more... come'on lets get serious", Ed says "God DAYUM"... and then pushes past what he thought was his limit. Breaking the boundaries.

Then I like to slam the headphones on and listen to some rap with a faster beat. Tried to do this before the Novice comp but I felt a little like a jerk, as everyone else is chatting/helping each other out, so I quickly ditched them :shifty: Was a mainstay before each rugby game, though.

Also, a lot of people seem to like the interaction with others to psyche themselves up. I'm a bit opposite, I like time to myself to go over things and think about what I'm going to do. Other people involving me in their rituals usually just serve to distract me...

I'm pretty relaxed most of the time so I just go about business as usual. On the day I like to listen to some metal and just walk around aimlessly (used to piss my coaches off something shocking). If you do this in sports like wrestling, or in alot of guys cases on here, powerlifting/bodybuilding, be where you need to be and have someone with you to let you know how far away you are so you don't miss your call

Night before I make sure I lay everything out that Im going to need for comp day, for me this means belt and wraps, soft suit, all the food that Ill need.

I don't get much sleep because the anticipation really hypes me up. Im visualising as many things as I can. I imagine what Ill hear, what Ill see, wha Ill smell and what Ill feel and break it down in mini segments for every lift. Its hard to explain in words but by the time I reach the platform I have already performed every lift in my head so vividly that I know I can just switch off and run on autopilot.

In terms of comp day I try my best to zone out away from everything else and just focus on my own lifting, its quite hard when youve got mates lifting and you get caught up in with what theyre doing. Thats why I beleive having a good handler is so important, they worry about all the litle stuff so you can just focus on lifting. While im waiting Ill listen to some heavy metal, or something to get the aggression up and continue with my visualisation. Right before the lift Ill take a big whiff of ammonia and a battle cry usually ensues lol

I basically jusy lie around until it's time to get ready. I go through my posing and that in my head but otherwise I just be as lazy as possible. Tiny bit of stretching and posing then I am onstage. Even with sporting events I would relax until the last possible minute.

I have a question....

How do you guys feel about sex the night before? Would it affect your performance on the platform/stage?

Yes/No/Don't think it matters?

How's two minutes of low energy activity going to affect your performance....LOL! :pfft:

Old school coaches used to discourage sex before competition, unsure of their reasoning?

Personally unless it turned into a marathon session I can't see it having a real impact. Might even be good pre bodybuilding show - call it an extra cardio & abs session!

Personally, I don't think it does (not in my exp anyway), but I know there are pro athletes around that keep it out of their training. David Haye is one example, he apparently keeps it out for a month leading up to a fight  Says it makes him like a rabid dog by the time he gets in the ring :pfft: (he seemed to be joking though... I think)

Maybe that's the reasoning - all that pent up energy needs an outlet, so if you frustrate yourself like that, just maybe it'll lead to increase in aggressiveness come comp/match time

For bodybuilding it's supposed to make you very vascular for a few minutes afterwards, obvoiusly in that case it needs to be done backstage instead of the night before :pfft:

Just Did It?

Sex Before Competition

Passion is an amazing thing. It drives people to accomplish incredible feats. But can passion, when it turns to sex, diminish an athlete's performance?

The mythology has been around for centuries. During the Victorian era doctors incorrectly believed that the spilling of semen (ejaculation) would reduce health and vitality. People were told to abstain from sex, even if they were married, unless it was for procreation.

That thinking has been handed down from one generation to the next. The modern version is the oft-repeated phrase, "Women weaken legs!" Some coaches actually forbid athletes to engage in sex before major competitions. To test the validity of that belief, we have to explore the conditions surrounding sex.

TIME

The first thing that's important is to determine how long you're actually having sex.

If you're an athlete having sex for 30 minutes to an hour, you're not going to deplete your energy in any significant way the following day. However, if you're having a marathon sex session for several hours, the lack of sleep can impact your capabilities.

For the majority of people, it's not the sex that hurts their performance, it's staying up all night looking for sex that's the problem.

ENERGY

The act of sexual intercourse is sometimes blamed for diminishing an athlete's performance. However, sex isn't particularly taxing. If you're a typical person, you burn about 5 calories a minute during sex. If you engage in athletic competition or intense exercise, that number climbs to between 15 and 25 calories per minute. So as long as your idea of sex doesn't involve a high-wire act, a trampoline and sprints, you're not going to burn enough calories to make a difference the next day.

TESTOSTERONE

Some speculation has been made that sex reduces testosterone, so athletes who have sex the night before are less aggressive. It's not true. Studies were conducted to track testosterone levels and it was discovered they returned to normal within a couple hours of having sex. That finding doesn't suggest athletes should change their sexual behavior the night before, but it does suggest a possible benefit of sex an hour or two before competition.

If you're competing in something that requires less aggression and more concentration, like golf, sex an hour or two before might help you relax and focus. The opposite would be true for sports that require aggression like football or hockey.

Of course if you're a hothead during competition and are constantly receiving penalties, sex just before might take off the edge and make you a better competitor.

The idea that it's the lack of sleep that makes it problematic is more to the point but from my perspective sex makes me sleep better, it's the bloody conversation afterwards that keeps me awake.. can you keep your disappointment to yourself please!

hahahahaha cool topic.......

Well personally I'll seal this from another great lifter who I like cause I believe it..... If you have train right and everything is on track..... you have no injuries your diet is good and your not sick... then there should be no reason why you miss a lift...... if ya look into that its very true so what's left to let you down..... YOUR MIND so in that case get fuckin amped and go fuckin nuts on the day cause you own that shit......result good day on the platform...

Now as to the nights before comp day for me I just rest and relax because I am going to mentally and physically drain myself come comp day so I make the most off the peace and quiet before the storm so to speak..but to help me get there heavy music with plenty off yelling always helps me and when I am warming up I have no respect for the weight small or large its going get moved with as much force and power that I can bring and I will do it all day if I have too but hay thats just me....

Now the sex thing.... I'll take that when ever I can get it..... :pfft: :pfft: :pfft: :pfft:

Sorry J didn't mean to hijack your thread, but is quite interesting getting different people's views on this particular matter, perhaps I should have made my own thread...

Mods??

Title - Sex Pre-comp

I was going to split the topics for you, but then thought that it is a valid on-topic discussion, it's relating to a pre-comp "ritual" :)

If BJ would rather it be split then I'll split the posts up.

keep it in mate, like you siad...its relative to the topic.

One thing ive noticed..and it seems to come from the Powerhouse lifters (maybe oldbull could clarify on this) sniffing the bar before unracking it on squats. ive seen OB and Maria Bright-water both do this on setups and afew others, and was just wondering if this was just a typical set up ritual or something more?. perhaps have some effect like Ammonia?
