So whats everyones thoughts on dragging yourself to the gym if you have a cold/other illness? Obviously not bed-ridden but just under-the-weather? Been trying to shake a throat infection, mild-ish, headaches etc for a few days...been once since I've been like this? Is it advisable to push on through?? Or leave it til you're better I hate not going but my head was soooooo sore!!!

Well it depends on what you are doing really. Low intesity exercise can stimulate the immune system which can help you fight off a cold, but there's a fine line between doing that and too much which could compromise your immune system. When you're sick your body needs to use the nutrients you eat for optimal cellular function to fight off infections. If you're doing high intesity exercise, your muscles will take priority.

Nothing wrong with going for a walk or something like that but just take it easy and get better soon :D

Are you preparing for the womans olympia 2011?

Are you preparing for the olympics?

Are you getting in shape to pass the fitness test to be sent to the moon?

The answer is no. Take a week off and get well. Nothing annoys me more than sick people spreading their germs over the equipment at the gym. If you were sick and coughing and sneezing at my gym I would tell you to go home or get the staff to get you to leave. you will just get more and more run down anyway. :naughty:

Hi Katie,

Better you will take off from gym and do some exercise at home so other members will not get virus.

But if you are preparing for any competition or title then do consult with your gym instructor before leaving for gym.

well, unlike jimjim old codger who needs to rest up.

this is just my personal philosophy and what I do.

one I never get sick. well not for 2-3 years. If I feel the first onset of my glands in throat flaring up, straight away I positive reaffirm "I'm not getting sick", and drink heaps of water. Who needs a doctor aye when you have that cure?

in my head YES I am training for the Ms Olympia, or the Olympics. So training is something that I LOVE to do and nothing like a little bit of a virus in my system is gonna get the better of me.

I'm very much of the MINDSET, and still train. From the morning just make sure you're well hydrated if not overdose a tad and flush the virus out. Take Berrocca's or some Vitamin C or even a good old orange every couple of hours.

STILL TRAIN. Any momma's boys that can't handle someone sneezing can take themselves home or they can wear a face mask. Weight training, bodybuilding is not for the faint hearted, it's about having complete control of your mind to create your ultimate physique. That is hard ass training.

Getting a good sweat up, pumping that blood through your body and into your muscles will also help get rid of that virus. This has been tested personally and is not for the faint-minded.

Go hard or go home is something that is said often and could be truly used in this instance. if you think you're weak, you're weak, if you think you're sick, you're sick. And if any clown ever dares to tell you to go home, you can tell him where to shove his unsolicitored advice.

Try a quick nap in your car after work or 15-30 minutes before a workout, if you need that rest if feeling not 100%. Peace, love and light.

Gentlemen,

Lay off the digs at Huck, she's not so good at taking it.

Consequently after a good start today (I quite liked two of her posts) she's managed to get a week long ban for "Multiple Abusive Posts".

Leave it be now or join her!

Putting more stress on a body that's fighting of an infection isn't smart it's stupid. Weight training wont stimulate your nervous system positively if you are already sick, provided you don't have aids your immune system is plenty stimulated by the presence of a virus.

Nothing you do no matter your mind set can change this fact, once a virus gets a foot hold if you have never had it before you have to wait for your body to figure out which immune cell to mass manufacture to kill it and that usually takes atleast a few days. You do yourself no favors by training when you are sick the whole reason you feel weak and lethargic is because your body wants you to rest.

Anecdotally speaking by training when sick all you will do is make it take longer to get better.

Stay home.

I do.

No point in straining a strained body.

Forget the he-man egos. Listen to your body. Everyone is different in regards to activity levels.

I hate staying home, but you can always catch up when you are better. You wont slip into diabetic obesity in a week.

I think it's good to have a workout while your not well. It really depends how sick/unwell you are. Of course if you go to a public gym, it's not fair on everyone else who may catch it. I always feel better after a training session when I have a fever, blocked nose etc.
