Question- Sore Back

Recommended Posts

I think that I managed to pinch a nerve in my lower back last weekend. So as a result I have not been to the gym all week and I am looking at starting back in the morning, just doing 1 set of my new programme. I have talked to my instructor and he has altered my programme to suit.

So my questions are....

How long should I be expecting to wait till this pain goes away?

What have you done to help it, when this has happened to yourself.

What did you take if anything......

Now I can not take pain relief or anti inflams as they make the pain worse (Iknow Ihave a fucked up body) so I do suffer from a fair bit of it.

Thanks for your advise.

Yup, a physio or chiro or osteo.

I tweaked my back about 6 weeks ago, and spent days hobbling around "like I had a peg up my arse". (That was my sister's comment, and as she's an osteopath, I presume this is a clinical description)

After the first sleepless night trying to be staunch, I took some Voltaren Rapid 25 for a couple of days, and that helped keep me moving. My first osteo treatment made a huge difference - I literally hobbled in, and bounced out (and although I was exaggerating the bouncing for my sister's benefit, there was no way I could have done that before treatment). Other than that, it's just a matter of time.

Not a physio > Osteo would be a better fit  work physically to manipulate the muscle/body. Chiro perhaps if you think your spine is out of alignment maybe but it sounds muscular based on your description.

Totally agree with seeing an Osteo. They can cover similar practices to a physio/chiro plus the addition of their own Osteo skills.

opti with every respect the only thing andre01 says about the injury is 'I think that I managed to pinch a nerve in my lower back last weekend'

suggesting that it is muscular is a big mistake, maybe you have more information that the rest of us.

the first thing that must happen is to get a diagnosis, then select a treatment, if it is a nerve problem i would stay the hell away from osteo and definitely chiro, if its just muscular then fine. even manipulation by a physio wont really help a nerve issue in the back if a disc is pushing on a nerve, you will figure that out after a couple of months at the physio and its not really getting any better.

After a week of walking around "with a stick up my arse" my back is gettin gmuch better. I have taken an anti inflam. I tend not to take pain relief as it tends to make the pain worse. Yes Ive already been to a pain clinic which is how i learnt this. I now just take a cheap anti inflam as it is the only thing that works. So as it is improving I wont be seeing anyone that combined with no gymn work for 8 days, if it get worse again Ill see my osteo.

This has happened to me often in the past, not so often these days. Sometimes from doing the most unlikely of exercises or activities.

If the nerve is pinched to the point where you can't stand up straight, you will have to go see a chiropractor. They will crack your back which will free the nerve and after a few stretches and some walking you will be good as new in a few days :-)

If the nerve is pinched but you are able to stand upright, this can be difficult to treat. The pain from the pinched nerve causes inflammation, which presses on the surrounding tissue and exaggerates the problem.

If you can't take painkillers or anti-inflamatories, I would highly recommend that you have a couple of acupuncture sessions. This has worked magic for me and is the best treatment for this kind of injury in my opinion. They can naturally reduce the inflammation and pain through stimulating certain pressure points. Way superior than any tablet you can get which doesn't work for you anyway :)

Your right mate - my comment was a little too general as more defining what I would do if it was muscular.

Andre - concerns me that you still are not walking straight - would pay to go see a doc mate just in case its not a nerve at all. Even if he says you just need to rest - may give you a bit of security in the knowledge...

Much, much better thanks to everyone that made comments. I have managed to put my back, back into place this morning. I also started back at the gym as well, to much my surprise it was really good. I understand where you all were coming from and as this has happened to me a number of time in the past I have a fair understanding of what happended and I am always put onto the same recevery programme every time. So once again thaks for you support and as I say I am fine now.
