Review - Ultimate Protein (5lb Strawberry/Vanilla)

Work is a tad slow today so thought I’d write a review...

Bodybuilding.co.nz recently (currently!) had a special on 5lb Ultimate protein tubs, so I bought a couple – one in Vanilla flavour, and one in Strawberry.

Ultimate Protein - 5lb tub (Strawberry + Vanilla flavours)

Taste/Smell: 9/10

Friggin awesome! Both the Strawberry and the Vanilla flavours taste great – maybe not quite Strawberry (more Wildberry) or Vanilla (maple syrup/pancake?!) flavoured, but great tasting nonetheless. Smell is awesome, and it has kinda lingered around my desk a bit to the point where people ask me what that great smell is – "have I been having pancakes?!" is a common question as of late. Goes down the hatch very easily, and doesn’t taste terrible in water. Best consumed with full fat milk though in my experience :nod:

It misses out on a 10/10 rating only because I have tasted better protein powder(s). It may come down to opinion, but I couldn’t give it a 10 knowing that it isn’t the best protein I’ve ever tasted.

Contents/Effectiveness = 9/10

Nothing outstandingly good or bad here, extra points though for low carb (3g per 30g scoop) and low fat (2g per scoop), making it potentially ideal for any sort of diet. Protein per 30g scoop is pretty good at 22g.

Label is very helpful, listing a “Typical Amino Acid Profile” table as well as a slight extension to the usual “Nutrition Facts” table and a full ingredients list. This isn’t something that really affects making a purchase for me, but it’s good to see the company has made an honest effort in the packaging, and even the hardiest label-investigator should be happy with the information contained here :nod:

Mixability = 6/10

To be honest, this was my big letdown of the deal. The powder itself is slightly sticky to hold – almost fine sugar-like. 80% of my protein shakes are... well... shaken... in a shaker – and most of the time they will be post-workout. To bring them to the workout, rather than pre-mix it, I carry the powder in the shaker, and fill with water following the workout. Now to get to my roundabout point, the protein doesn’t have a bar of it. It sticks to the bottom like glue, and if you dislodge it with a knife (or similar-shaped implement) it just turns into a big floating clump that refuses to break up. I guess you could say it’s not a very “portable” protein :(

Another slight (but not huge) peeve, is that it is very frothy. This mainly rears its head when mixed with milk in a shaker, but also happens to a lesser extent with water. It’s like having a beer served with a tad too much head on it, to the point where when I’m done shaking it up, I’ll scoop the froth out and then drink it.

On the good side it seems to be completely fine if blended, which is really the saving grace here from a lower score.

Cost = 10/10 (on special)

I think I worked it out to be less than $30 per kilo ($28?) which is bloody outstanding for a branded, flavoured protein, delivered. This was on special – about $40 per tub off the retail! – and the special is still around at the moment, so jump on it if you get a chance.

At its normal retail of $110, it’s still a fair price to pay for a low fat, low carb, decent protein content powder – I’d probably readjust the score to 8/10 though, as it would no longer be mind-bogglingly cheap as it is right now.

If you're lucky enough to know the bodybuilding.co.nz March coupon code, you'll get a further 5% off the special price ;)

Overall = 8/10 (not an average)

It smells great, tastes awesome, is bloody cheap at the moment... it’s only downfall is the (portable) mixability. If this isn’t a concern for you, and you mainly blend your shakes, jump on this special now. It is, however, the main way I mix my shakes, hence a couple of points missing from the overall score.

All in all though, I highly recommend this protein powder, give it a try if you’re in the market :grin:

You are right about its stickyness. It makes a hell of a mess.

Yeah something I forgot to mention in the review is the consistency sort of resembles icing sugar - and when you dip your hand in, it's almost impossible to avoid some of it finding it's way out of the tub, to the surrounding area. Gets all over your hand pretty easy.

I got cookies and cream and although far from the taste it does ressemble cookie dough.

Not bad interested to try other flavours

Oh sweet, I was going to try the Cookies and Cream but went for the "safer" options.

Just for kicks I took a photo the other day of what was left in the bottom of my shaker after drinking it (and also after violently hitting/shaking it to get what was left out :pfft:):

Might be slightly hard to make out, but that's roughly a quarter scoop of protein stuck at the bottom. The red bits are things that taste like berry, I guess to add to the flavour... kind of like what you'd find in an ice cream or a yoghurt I guess.

Hmm, i was considering maybe purchasing this but i haven't ever heard of this brand before and even doing some research couldn't really find anything, was abit worried buying a unknown brand as many previously blends have been pulled up for shit protein content, so i was unsure...

Let us know if you need COA's on these, for what it's worth this same blend is sold under another name as the in house brand for GNC all over the US.

What do you mean by COA's?
