darmanx, mcdonalds and fast food isnt cheap. i was eating this every meal a couple of years ago and was broke all the time. now i eat healthy clean food and it costs me a fraction of price. i dont buy that shit that ppl say eatign healthy is expensive... its not. frozen vege cheap as, potatoes are cheap, i can get a kg of chicken from mad butcher when on special for the price of 1 mcdonalds combo.

too many ppl got too many excuses. and its not the govt fault lol

The gov is to blame for the fucking tax increases and high unemployment. Therefor people cant buy proper food. Yes i have to also agree that there are just some lazy fuckers around and they get no simpathy from me either but i think the majority of people would buy good food if prices where lower. Like remove GST first off. Get fonterra to cap their profit for NZ and lower the milk prices so the people can afford to buy it for a change.

The moral of this story is that in a country where unemployment have reached new hights, it had become realy easy for people to buy crap like chips, soda, maccas. Hell you can now almost buy a family feast for $10+. f*ck, you walk into a countdown and the first thing you see is buy 5 for $3 bags of chips and soda is like $2 for 2.25L. Then walk down the vegie isle and 1 brockoly cost like $3. enough to feed 1 person.

I know i have got totaly of topic and appologise for it but i to make the facts.

Sorry Darkman, gotta disagree with ya here. I'm currently living on the DPB (hopefully not for much longer) and I and my kids eat a lot healthier than when I was working and bringing in a pretty darn good income. It's more a case of giving a f*ck, being smart and refusing to be a slave to convenience & desire.

Ok, it's really easy to compare the price of milk vs coke, and moan that people are more likely to give their kids coke than milk. But that's only true if the same people are too fucking lazy to do a bit of thinking or too spineless to say "no" to their kids. Buy the same 2 litres of milk, and space it out with glasses of water for the kids, and it'll last a lot longer than the 2 litres of coke would, when the kids are more likely to guzzle down glass after glass.

You can't make a straight comparison like that. Just like fruit vs bikkies. A kilo of apples will probably cost more than a kilo of bikkies, but one apple will keep a kid from being hungry for a hell of a lot longer than the equivalent weight of bikkies.

As has been said, it's about people wanting to change. Until they make the mental shift, nothing will force them to change. It wasn't the costs of various foods that made me change, it was an internal desire to turn my life around. Just like it was an internal desire to stop smoking that made me give up the ciggies, not the price-rises or the endless nagging from the smoke-nazis.

Like the OP, I would get pissed off at the people around me, but I've come to realise that there really is no point. You can't browbeat them into changing, all you can do is be there to offer some support when they choose to do it themselves. I figured this out after a recent trip home, when I tried preaching to several overweight (actually, clinically obese) members of my family. They all agreed they were overweight and unhealthy, they all asked for advice on what they could do, and they all then came up with reasons that they couldn't follow that advice. I'm happy to say that since then, one of my sisters has made some changes (small ones for now, it seems some of my advice stuck) and regularly keeps in touch for support, advice and help. One down, ??? to go

fat pricks are costing the tax payer millions of dollars a year... they need exterminating like fleas and rats.

Sorry Tom but i have to correct you on this. Its the Gov thats costing the tax payer more money for letting gready fuckers like fonterra, power companies and then gov themselves to trade in this country.

I agree that 9 years of Helen did leave the country in a mess but we are on the mend :pfft:

Its not the governments fault people are fat.

Its not the governments fault people are lazy.

Free choice is a wonderful thing. You live in one of the greatest countries in the world with next to non existant poverty. Quite often the people who complain about putting good food on the table for their kids are the same people who drink, smoke, gamble and have sky television.

Healthy food in NZ is reasonably priced and plentiful. Make smart choices and dont become a victim.

Andy.

So true. Lazy is a main offender for takeaways, in my opinion. Here and there due to time, maybe, but damn laziness rules the waistline.

My wife put on a ton of weight in a short time, and turned out she had a tumour in her head. crazy. But it's gone now, and the weight has been tough for her to move, but shes making it a goal and it is slowly coming off. :)

Some people just cant be fu7ked.

I saw this obese woman driving down the motorway. I was passing and she had a burger in one hand and a coke in the other. Classic. I am not sure what to make of that. It would have made a great motivational poster.

Ok, so will now elaborate what i meant by my comments since a few disagree. The point i was trying to make is yes i agree that there are quite a few out there that dont care about their health and well being and quite frankley i dont give 2 fucks about them and yes ultimately they are the one that cost the country millions due to ill health and shit like that.

Now for the person that do take care of themselves like the most of us on this forum, yes you can eat quite healthy and make good choices. The difficulty comes in here. I find it to be a bit easier to live this kind of lifestyle if you are single, might have a partner and maybe a child and providing you are getting an ok type of wage. Some of you might still be living with mum and dad and they provide or help at least with your lifestyle.

When it comes to raising a family of 5 on a single wage and there are alot of people facing this cenario it becomes a little more daunting and the chips and soda and maccas becomes easier to buy and ultimately fall into bad habits.

So according to Andy i complained about the gov so im now a smoker, drinker and gambler.(just having you on mate). FYI i have never smoked, i drink once maybe every 6 months and never have i gambled, scouts honour. Anyway, currently im in a place where i have a family of 5 and times use to be good but the town im living in is struggling. It is hard to live healthy lifstyle in a situation like ours but i try an do the best. To give you an idea our food budget is about $250 a week for a family of 5 and 2 of them are babies. Like i said i never use to struggle but bad times have fallin upon us for now. Unfortunately there some out there who are not strong enough to do this and falls into a place where bad food is all they can afford. And again some just want to live this way and others are in there not by choice.

So i think ultimately for anyone to go and judge someone cause they have 4 bottles of coke 10 bags of chips, bread and no healthy food in their trolly, just be aware that you do not their circumstances. So to everyone who ripped me a new one i hope this makes a bit more sense.

It was clearly not pointed at you personally and im sorry if you took it that way. I also have a family of five, a single income and mortgage. I am a fitter and turner. We are also both working off the same food budget. Actually ours is a little less. We get by on healthy food and very rarely have take out as we cant afford. We never buy soft drinks. It can be done.

Andy.

i can't even be bothered explaining why your logic is so flawed but, how is the government responsible for high unemployment?? it's called a recession buddy and started in lands far away from here...

Unfortunately running the country costs money so if you cut gst then it just has to come from somewhere else.

The people who 'can't afford' good food... are they the same people who also seem to have Sky TV dishes on their houses?

Personal priorities and personal views on what constitutes cultural capital. By cultural it refers to all cultures, which can be, but isnt indicative of race.

Some peoples view of what is important is certainly the opposite of others.

I saw an article in the Herald, detailing why low income people are having it tough. What a joke. the case study had a woman on the DPB who after bills, had $80 a week spending. That's after phone, cell, internet, food, petrol etc. She has more left over than a lot of professionas I know.

But I guess it was also my fault that I got a mortgage.

I go back to what tomsammce said... Junk is not always a cheap option. More convenient, sure, but that comes back to priorities...

I got caught out last week when I wasnt at home for a few days and didnt organize any food. for 1 days eating I spent about 100 bux which would of bought me food for a week.

Along the lines of what other people have said, some people just do not want to change. We do a few nutrition consultations at work, offering advice about how to make healthier eating choices. Trying to explain to people that drinking 2.5l of coke a day and a loaf of white bread A MEAL isnt healthy or cost effective, is like talking to a brick wall
