Expected Strength Gains

Recommended Posts

Hey, I've been weight training fairly consistently for about 18months now, a bit of time off here and there, with a number of different programs.

I've recently shifted to a new program and i've noticed some pretty impressive and consistent strength gains on this.

I'm curious as to what people expect their strength gains to be.

Lets use Squats and Flat Bench (BB or DB) as the exercises to measure.

For bench press. After returning to bench, when having not done it for awhile. I would expect myself to increase the weight 2.5kgs, every week, while maintaining very similar rep count.

While I am trying to go further and making a PB everytime. I expect maybe 1 more rep each week on that same weight. Once I increase 2 reps Id go up a weight. Its quite hard to say at this stage. Varies a lot.

Don't expect regular or linear gains

To many variables to measure weekly and while you may have a few good weeks expect a few bad ones also

Over say a year period I have seen in my journal 6-8 week periods of good gains but then a few weeks of not being able to perform at what I expected

Have learnt now to enjoy a few weeks of good gains but to take a week off a few times a year and reset then building back up to new PBS 6-8 weeks later
