If you want somewhere a bit more midrange than the hostel/Intercontinental extremes, you could try this place http://www.victoriacourt.co.nz/ which is very central, you can walk everywhere from there (the House would take you about 15-20 mins to walk to depending on your speed!), and there is also parking (you mention driving, so I'm guessing you'll have a car?).

My family and in-laws stayed there when we got married and couldn't accommodate them all, and they were all happy with it's cost and centrality.

Motels right in town are quite rare, it's mostly hotels, and not all of them have parking (at any price) and a lot of them are hellish expensive.

The Ibis and the Holiday Inn on Featherston Street aren't badly priced (no parking at the Ibis). On Willis St, there's Trinity and the Abel Tasman (with parking nearby).

For motels, the Apollo in Mt Victoria (working distance to nightlife) and the Marksman at the Basin Reserve (miles from anywhere, but if you've got a car it's handy to everything). Marksman's not far from the 'House.

I've stayed at a few in Wellington (when I used to fly in from Auckland for business stuffs).

I'd probably recommend Holiday Inn as a well-located, moderately-priced, and decently-setup kinda hotel. Pretty sure they have parking but I never drove there so not 100% on that. It's not too far off the motorway (pretty much opposite the railway station) so it's easy to find, and it'd be about 30-40mins walk to the House from there, good way to walk through and see the town ;)

As BK said, Copthorne is ok + reasonably priced. I've stayed there once, it's near the beach so if you catch a nice day it'd be a preem location for some playin up. It's also probably a little closer to the House than Holiday Inn is.

Others I've stayed at either aren't as good, or might be a bit of a pain to navigate to if you're a Welly newb :)

Marksman has good parking and is only 5 mins walk mto Courtenay Place or the"house" plus you can walk 20metres to the Basin to get a beer and watch the FIREBIRDS get a hiding.

From memory the Holiday Inn doesn't do their own parking. They use a similar parking setup to the Intercontinental using Wilsons car park and costing you more money. In saying that the Intercontinental had a rate going yesterday for $169 including breaky and something else but I can't remember what it was.
