Gyms in the North Shore area of Auckland...

Hi there,

I'm an Englishman coming over to Auckland to work at North Shore Hospital in Auckland during May and June. I'll be staying in the Takapuna area of the city.

I'd be grateful if anyone on this forum could advise me of any decent gyms in this area - I'm looking for a good selection of weights and a friendly atmosphere.

From searching on the internet I've found a "Les Mills" gym and a "Justworkout" gym - what are these like?

Thanks in advance!

I've never been a big fan of the Les Mills gyms, dont get me wrong there great but i prefer harcore gyms like what dorian and ronnie train in, most gyms ive stayed at have older gears and more free weights and it is also cheaper than a gym like Les Mills

are ther anysuch hard core gyms in nz?

please list some?

and les mills as plenty of free weights 2 sets of each weight going all the way from 2kg to 72kg pretty much

the're free weight selection is good but if they introduce more machine variety (esp. calf machines) that would be awesome, but it seems the manager is not interested. thats why I also train at the unipol sometimes.

i do standing calf raises on smith machine seated ones on the seat and the pad goes over your knees and then up stairs they have another similar calf machine.

calfs are a pretty basic muscle to train i would have thought so i dont think u need a a variety of machine to work calfs. u think?

The POWERDOME in Dunedin was where i did most of my lifting while at uni and it was hardcore, there were no aerobics and hardly any females.

Unipol is the universtiy gym , it's ok for free but i didnt like it, too many wannabe bodybuilders and not enough serious people for me. I live in gisborne now and we have a harcore gym over kaiti, it's part of the ymca here but since it's over in the pooer area it got less machines, more free weights and a nurtured culture of harcore lifting.

yah same here, but i like their T-bar row machine. wish we had one at Les-mills. I've tried the old-school stuff with the bar setup in one of the corners but it just doesn't seem right and their preacher benches are veyr good for some reasons. always felt pain in my shoulders when I used the ones at the Les-mills for some reason.

where is the powerdome located exactly?
