BCAA's

One of the less "flashy" supplements I know, but I believe they've helped my physique a lot - particularly with brutal heavy training.

I take a teaspoon-full after each workout (cardio included), & I've definitely noticed my body has responded - less soreness & seems easier to get through a full-on week of training.

I use the Musashi BCAA's, cost about $120.00 but will last for an age. Doesn't taste the best but will do the job.

Does anyone have any experiences using this, & does anyone know of other brands of BCAA's? All I've been able to find is Musashi.

I have tried the smaller one, 100~150g. I didnt really notice a difference. Then i took a look at the nutritional profile and realised im getting more BCAA's through my daily whey intake, and that supplementing with BCAA's when your already having whey doesnt make alot of sence.

Of course if you arent taking whey then i would think you may notice a difference.

Just a better recovery really. I take it right after I workout with Dextrose.

What's your comparison with? Better than nothing, or better than post-workout whey isolate?

I'm curious - I can remember a big difference when I starting taking whey post-workout, but I've never tried BCAAs.

  • 1 year later...

I use the Dymatize BCAA 2200, which gives about 2.2 grams of BCAA's per 4 tablets. Cost $75 for 400 tabs.

Previously tried the Musashi BCAA capsules, which worked out to 0.5 grams of BCAA's per 2 capsules.

Some articles I've read recommend a minimum of 3-5 grams BCAA's pre & post training (6-10 grams on training days) & half that on non training days, but I'm quite happy with what I'm getting from the Dymatize tabs.

As for their effect on my training & recovery, who knows, but I'm not prepared to stop taking them now to find out. But that's also why the supplement industry is worth billions world wide, there are no stated independantly funded MEDICAL STUDIES that give real guaranteed, un-biased, true to the bone results, only UNIVERSITY studies (who rely on funding from the self same supplement companies for whom the studies are being done).

All I know is that I spent a number of years doing heavy training with absolutely no supplementation, including basic EFA's or protein powders, with very limited results for my efforts (1985 - 1990). I tried competing in 88, but did not even get through the initial elimination rounds, but seeing the other guys in the lin-up opened my eyes to what was possible with good supplementation and basic protein improvement.

BCAA's are only amino acids ie. bits of protein.

BCAA supplements are three of these, specifically;

L-Leucine

L-Isoleucine

L-Valine

They're found in all protein.......

You're paying $75 for 400 tabs.

That's 100 servings of 2.2 grams or 220g in total.

The Musashi protein powder I'm currently using gives me 5.2g of the same Amino Acids per serve plus another 5.4g of the other 5 essential amino acids. $75 buys me 327.6g of the above 3 or 667g of total aminos.

You could probably find similar levels in other hiigh quality protein foods.

Basically, you're wasting you're money on protein pills.
