sad really sad decision. No offense I'm not kiwi but I feel bad for Benji and the boys,I was sure they would win,.Same goes for the silver ferns. This country needs to learn to Celebrate Victory.Although the All whites pulled off something special they don't deserve the award as much as the Kiwi's,can you imagine what it must feel like for that team, that no matter what they do this award will go to teams that achieved something less than complete victory. They pushed through for their country and they cant even pick up damn team of the year.Sad.

On the other hand I have always admired how you guys support all sports and all your teams, sometimes I feel though you'll prefer being underdogs then being a force to reckon with( All Blacks being the exception) .Celebrate Champions and you'll find more of them I'm sure.

Kiwis were kind of average this year mate. Yeah they won the four nations and good on them...but they were far off their best in the other games.

Average my arse. They won a Championship they are never supposed to win. What more could they possibly do to qualify for the award?

The results seem to have polarized alot of people, however they were voted on by 28 individuals so the process was and is very democratic.

I think Netball will win in the future and obviously Rugby will as well, however personally I was really glad the All Whites won. That night we qualified and the goals by Fallen,Winston Reid and Smeltz, along with Pastons penalty save were magic and captivated a large section of NZ. I still get tingles when I watch those moments. Whilst I watched the AB's and Silver Ferns wins with great pride, I didnt get the same reaction, perhaps because the All Whites results were so unexpected and rare, whereas quite often the Silver Ferns have a good go against Aussie and they are fairly evenly matched and with the AB's you expect them to win most games. Both these teams are almost always 1 or 2 in the world, whereas the All Whites are only top 100.

Put in perspective, the All Whites draw versus the reigning world champs Italy, would be IMO similar to a country like Georgia or any other rugby playing minow nation drawing with the AB's.

Im am not 100% sure of all the criteria involved but it appears that the awards are more than just a win loss contest otherwise many other sports would be finalists as well. Just my opinion/2 cents.

Im not taking anything away from what the All Whites achieved but I totally disagree with this. Would a team like the ABs ever get knocked out in pool play of a world cup? France only just qualified for the comp. Lots of great teams didnt qualify. Football teams are never really at the top of their game for extended periods of time compared to other sports.

I also get tingles when I see footage of the All whites at the world cup including that magical night on November 14th 2010 when the All whites made it to the World Cup and I think the All Whites should be team of the year.

Ahhh what happened on this magical night?? They had already been to the world cup.

I'm with you.

The All Whites did so much for football in NZ in 2010. Yes winning is kinda the point of sport, but NZ went into the World Cup bottom of the 32 teams there (with the possible exception of North Korea, depending on what table you were looking at), and were rightly considered to have no chance in hell.

I was impressed with the way they fired up enthusiasm for the sport, and did far better than anyone could have predicted. I for one never even watched football prior to the World Cup, but have now become a bit of a fanatic and huge follower of the English premiership, and of course our Wellington Phoenix.

Netball? Still a big yawnfest whichever way you look at it (IMO). Rugby - yep, love it and watch every ABs game (and our Welly boys), but we've always been strong at that, and I don't think anything remarkable was done last year by them to outshine the boost the All Whites gave NZ football.

Just my 2c too (probably only 1c, but whatever).

Ahh a consistent performance maybe?

They were never supposed to win the Four Nations? Wow, you have alot of faith in their ability huh.

Kiwis are every bit as good as the Aussies...if not better? Well I like to think so.

What a joke! To save us International embarrassment can we rename this award the "Halberg Award for mediocrity".

They have sent a clear message that is if you attend a World Cup and don`t qualify for the next round or win a game and finish with a tournament ranking of 22 out of 24, then you have eclipsed all other contenders in this category. That makes the other contenders look pitiful of somewhat insulted as to how little their sport is thought of.

Personally I got up to watch the All Whites and eveintually conceded they finished exactly where they were probably expected to (22nd).

Soccer supporters appear on the defensive over this thinking its another "Rugby players with sour grapes" thing again and trying throw back that pathetc media spin that "they didnt lose a game".Quite a naive way to look at it.

Eventually I decided that the panel must have looked outside of the World Cup and decided to disregard the All Whites pitiful performance and take into account the rest of their 2010 games instead,

The other results they achieved in 2010 were absolutely sensational.

i) Lost 2-1 to Australia

ii)Lost 2-0 to Mexico

iii) beat Serbia 1-0 (A WIN!!! it must be this!!!)

iV) Lost 2-0 to Chile

v) drew 1-1 Honduras

v) Lost 2-0 Paraguay

Current ranking 64

Say no more!

In response to Holdenmans response, I respect your opinion and agree that realistically it would be a very unlikely day if the Ab's were ever knocked out in pool play, however that IMO illustrates the magnitude of what the All Whites achieved. In the Football World Cup their are IMO 8+ Teams capable of realistically winning it at the start of most tournaments, the level of competition is that high, at last years it may have been: Brazil,Argentina,Spain,Germany,Holland,France,Italy, Portugal.

With the Rugby World cup their are NZ, SA, AUS, ENG and France as realistic finalists, with the Rugby League WC there is NZ, AUS and England and with the Netball World Champs there is NZ, AUS, Eng and Jamacia. The level of these comps among the top teams is frigging amazing, but the depth of the extremely talented teams is shallower and that IMO is due to the fact that less nations play these sports. For Example, beating a good Kangeroos team in a league WC final is extremely difficult, as difficult as final in any sport. However to get to the final may not require beating more than one great team as, depending on the draw we may only have to play once against either England, France or Papua.

I think that is what alot of people miss with football in NZ; that the numbers of people playing the game competitively are huge, it is a bigger event than the Olympics. With the massive level of nations playing and the depth of the professional leagues around the world it is almost impossible for any won team to lay claim to an extended (3+ years) stay at the top. Usually the top national teams peak for a world cup and remain competitve for several years before or after.

NZ will always be a Rugby and to a lesser extent Netball and League mad nation and perhaps that places an expected emphasis on the results, however with the All Whites returning undefeated from an event that took 28 years to requalify for and one that many great teams have missed out on, I believe they are very deserving after all, the level of the Football WC is that high, we may have to wait a very long time to be debating this result again.
