Protein shakes and weight gain

Hiya,

So I received 2 bags of whey protein isolate from eatme last week, like the taste and everything but today when I weighed myself I had put on weight??

So my question is does protein shakes make you put on weight? I'm a newbie to the diet stuff...My overall goal is to lose weight and was doing so before I incorporated the shakes into my diet...

Now I've googled the topic and from my understanding if your diet remains the same whilst consuming the shakes you'll put on weight. However, if the shakes are used as a meal replacement i.e. for breakfast and/or dinner then you'll lose weight... yah yah this is an obvious result, but when I did cut my meals down I still put on weight so my bf seems to think it might be muscle I've gained, not sure...Can anyone shed some light on this? are there particular foods I should ignore while taking the shakes? bar fast-foods, junk, etc...

Should I even be drinking protein shakes whilst trying to lose weight?

Whey's just a convenient protein source, and a good balance of protein-carbs-fats is essential to building muscle and to becoming lean... it's the calorie load that's key here.

If you added whey to a diet that's already at your maintenance calorie load, then yes, you could put on weight.

If you replaced a high-carb meal with a whey meal, then it's possible you could have gained lean muscle mass, rather than bodyfat.

The scales are less helpful than you might think - you could weigh the same, but have shed bodyfat or gained lean muscle without gaining inches.

In the absence of doing your girths (bust/waist/hips/thigh/upper arm tape measurements), how do your "magic test pants" (you know, that favorite pair of jeans, or top, or whatever) feel - looser, tighter, no worse?

Hiya TFB!

I see now, I haven't actually measured myself so I should get around to that...

Lol at "magic test pants" haha...before I couldn't get them past my knees now I can get them half way up my thighs \:D/ but then again, I wash them constantly so that there super tight! Therefore I'm not sure if I'm losing inches or weight, I'll have to measure! Okay maybe having the jeans incredibly tight may not be the wisest thing to do, but very flattering when you finally get them on!!!

Thanks again and again and again Geoff for always replying to my silly posts and e-mails  I owe you one!

hey if your having them with milk skim or otherwise that could also explain the weight gain if it is indeed fat,if you intend to lose weight mix with water for best results.

Water instead of milk, I dont think hes preparing for the olympia, trim milk wont add pounds to his frame.

Mix it with milk tastes better and has calcuim and more protein.

the weight gain is affected by the total calories in...it doenst matter if you have excess calories from egg whites or cheese burgers.

im drinking a litre of milk a day and leaning up quite nicely.

whey protein industry is always to make changes to suit the wishes of the buyers. Local health food store should be a number of natural products, if it is something you want to join in. Looking online you also get more information about our products. They also realize that there are other proteins available in addition to the whey. You can get soy, rice or hemp protein. One of them might be better for you or someone you know. Soy, rice and hemp may be unsuitable for a person with lactose in whey is better than bigotry. Do not forget to always check with your health practitioner before dieting or anything new to add more protein to your diet. Although whey is a large amount of food that may already consume enough protein to your usual diet. In some cases, too much protein can threaten the health of the individual. Also, remember that taking supplements alone will not make you more fit. You can engage in a kind of exercise program as well.

OK, first I have to say that Protein shakes aren't any worse for people than steaks are. Seriously. All a protein shake has is protein powder and some fruit or milk or whatever. What can make them "unsafe" is the supplements that you use. For example, Creatine is a common additive to health drinks that probably isn't good for teens. What you need is a high quality, chemical free whey protein that has no additives. :)
