greyghost
Used to suffer from it so much even walking / treadmill was painful. Have got over by a lot of walking everyday building up speed slowly, plus a lot of calf work (standing, seated, altering foot placement). Only time it crops up now is when I push a little too hard on the walks.
GreekAdonis
Good shoes will make a huge difference Any motion control shoes will help but I prefer asics 1130's
Gym rat
I use to get shin splints as well but any more in the way of good cross trainers I wear Brook men's cross trainers they give me great support.
GreekAdonis
Running shoes are better than cross trainers for shin splints GYm Rat but if your cross trainers help then definitely stick with them

GreekAdonis
If you are useing your basketball shoes on the treadmill then its definitely the shoes! Do you run in your bball boots or just use them for bball?
deeepsouth_nz
Unfortunately its not such a simple thing as saying 'runners' or 'crosstrainers'. Shin splints are all too often used as a blanket term these days to describe all manner of calf pain. If it has been assessed and properly diagnosed than theres lots of different avenues you can look at doing as well as just changing shoes (which can also be influenced by foot pronation etc, tibial torsion and / or leg length discrepancy).....other things such as training / playing surfaces, training / playing volume, technique etc etc etc.ds
GreekAdonis
Where abouts is the pain? Inner shins? Both legs?
vracula
sorry i should have mentioned this before ,but from the info i have medial tibia stress syndrome, hurts on the inner shins, the pic points out the pain precisely. Flamer
anyone use compression garments,do they work?My dad does a lot of triathlon training and absolutely swears by them as far as recovery goes. Can't say I've heard of them used for shin splints - but worth a shot. Do you massage them? Starting from ankle, using both thumbs, working towards your heart (as in away from ankle towards knee). GreekAdonis
When do you get the shin splints? Just at bball?
Laver
I got them ages ago, a simple change of shoes fixed them thankfully. My friend had terrible issues with them, he was a very athletic person and they reduced him to a crawl. He spent $800 or so going to a foot specialist, got some hand picked shoes and custom made insoles, they've fixed his splints. Not sure if he can now gradually return to not using the insoles or what the future holds, would have to ask him. JumpNZ
Used to get them all the time as a high jumper. 12+ years jumping and I tended to get them most seasons. That was until I went through a phase of wearing sandals everywhere. Having to keep the sandals on my feet meant I was always dorsiflexing my ankle, which in turn strengthened my tib ant. Never had shin splints ever again.I would suggest getting some rubber tubing and strengthening your tibialis anterior. You never know, it may jut work. GreekAdonis
I will have a look at those shoes at work and see if I can suggest a pair to wear most of the time. For now try and wear the Lebrons and the Jordans mainly and see if that makes a difference
two_phat
yeah i used to get a lot, and they used to cripple me - I could literally barely walk when it was really bad. This is how I combated it-Before games, I had to ease into my warm-up - too quickly and i'd get shin splints. I'd also do a couple of stretches which helped loosen up the muscles in that region. I also had to stop playing a lot of indoor sports because of the impact.I also changed my running shoes to ones which offered more support.I also had a few people look at my running style, and I tried to change that (a very difficult thing to do!).Good luck with them!
