MuscleHead
Hi there, I'm male and have a female friend who is interested in toning up. She has a good figure and shape. I keep telling her she should work out with weights to speed up her metabolism and tone muscle but of course the standard reply is always "I don't want to get too big." My arguement about testosterone production and that it takes years of hard, intense training to build significant muscle mass seem to fall on deaf ears  What would you ladies recommend is a good all over workout for my friend? Thanks.
Sakura
You'll have to get her out of the mindset that lifting weights will make her "big". Have her come on this site and look at Poos&wees' or flamers' photos and then read their diaries and see the huge amount of weight they're lifting. When she sees that she'll know it wont just happen accidentally. If you're not aiming to build muscle you wont, it takes hard work and a determined effort (as everyone here knows). As for a routine for women, the same as a man's I guess but with slightly higher reps? PT
My goodness....if she only new how flippin hard it is for a woman to get "big"!! Tell her to get her little butt into the gym - have a chat to a good personal trainer , start with some light weight training (more to ease her muscles, tendons and ligaments into it) keep up some good cardio and eat clean and regularly. Tell her from all of us here...there's no way she'll turn into Arnie!!
MuscleHead
Thanks. My friend just read your posts and looked at the photos section. She asked me: "How do I look like that?" I said: "By lifting weights!!!" :pfft: She's made an appointment with a personal trainer to set up a weight training program.
KooKoo
Good on her! Just don't forget PT's point "eat clean and regularly" - diet's really important too!
Flamer
LOL - that's awesome. I hear the same thing myself all the time - "I don't want to get big!!" YEAH RIGHT! I'm so glad you managed to get your friend to see that lifting weights will benefit her - not make her big!!
MuscleHead
Definitely. I look at women like Madonna who keep themselves in top shape all year round and the only way they could achieve that is by weight training. It speeds up your metabolism and keeps your muscles lean and toned. It's a shame more women don't undertake serious weight training, I see them spending all their time on treadmills at the gym to little or no avail. Nothing has a more positive effect on the body than hitting the weights. And I have to add, it would benefit many more women if they would only add more protein to their diets! Sometimes getting a woman to eat a steak is a mission in itself! :pfft:

Evie
Ha ha that's funny "Don't want to get too big" Please! It's so so so hard to put on lean mass, it takes years! So glad you got your friend to see the pics of some of the girls (figure and physique) on this site! You can't look like these girls without picking up and putting down some serious kg's ... oh and eating (clean and regular of course). Complaining to me her muscles hurt. Ah yeah  that's how it works. I advised her to join a female gym and that seems to have helped her confidence.
