Otherwise good sites to look into are Homestay.com and AirBnB.com, these are rooms at people's houses or flats that you can easily get into short notice and book them like a hotel. This coming from a lad who just did the opposite of what you're doing and shifted to the UK, we booked a place off Homestay.com for our first couple weeks to take the pressure off so we could find a more long term place.
