I just pay myself what I want but I learnt pretty quickly the more I take the more I get taxed so I just put everything through the business. Start work when I want. Gym when I want . Take daytime naps a lot of days . But in winter I sometimes work 6 days a week long hours then im up at night doing accounts and quotes but I live a relatively stress free life as opposed to 3 years ago id be lucky to have 20 bucks left at the end of the week for mcds and having a tub of protein was like a gift from heaven.

Base salary isn't the greatest $30/hr but get company car free fuel, iPhone 6 and laptop.

When on site get allowance anywhere from $90-250 a day tax free depending on the country you are working in. Working away from home best way to make wicked pay.

Only had 3 years experience once I get more under my belt will travel abroad for work.

I'm pretty sure I dont get paid to go to Uni and so borrow money off my future self to pay for it and to live on. #notwinning

But uni is pretty fun, well labs are pretty cool anyway, lectures not so much but all you have to do is sit there take notes and press audio record button.

I charge ~60$ per hour PT but then have to pay rent too, and I'm limited with how many hours I can do because of uni. But it's more fun and less hours/more pay than working a minimum wage saturday/sunday job.

Work life balance between lecutres/labs/assignments/study/clients over here is non existant, but I get 10+ weeks off over summer which is pretty sweet.

I lose this thread.

Dinah have you got into second year ? Mbchb or whatever it's called

Hey,

Nah I didnt get in.

I did health sci last year which is the entrance for just over half the medical cohort at Otago each year, the other half is made up of postgraduate students (who have done a degree, masters, phd or other).

Prior to last year I didn't have any back ground in Chemistry, maths or physics (quit them after yr 11 at school) so ended up being not able to apply to med as I got a B- in one of my first semester papers (one of the rules), even though my overall grade for best 7 papers was A and my umat was 96th percentile, so if the rule didn't exist I probably would have got at least waitlist. Whch kinda sucks, but rules are rules.

Anyway, ironically the paper I got B- in was Chemistry, and I really loved it, so I'm now doing a Chemistry degree (just about to finish my second year, so one more left).

Next year I'm looking at applying for med to Otago and Auckland (UMAT), and doing the GAMSAT/GEMSAS to apply to 6 or 7 uni's in australia for med. GPA's transfer over to Australia well but then the entrance test is a beast (around 6-7 hours for me as I get extra time for dyslexia). Hopefully I'll get in somewhere, but if not I'll stay here and do honours year in chem, try again, and then if not i'll probably do a masters in science communication here as it looks mean, then try again, or give up haha. Never quit!

Gyzzbrah what's the difference between Otago or Dunedin, I'm at University of Otago which is in Dunedin?? What are you going to study?

Im going to study the social effects of alcohol in getting my dick sucked.. Nah jks im going to do a buisness degree (commerce) and maybe do a joint with something else I like, probs the arts or phillosophy etc. Then go back to auckland and find a job lol. It's kind of a dilemma for me, because the reason I wanna go to otago is so I can spend a few years away from cunts in auckland and meet new people etc, be a sickcunt like Azide is, get up to awesome shit, and also because the entry requirments are easy for me to get in. On the downside, i'll really miss my mates, friends, familiar faces, familiar city, sluzzas Ik from college who I could root etc But if I manage to get into auckland (hard for me bc grade score / english credits etc) then I wont get to have as much good shit, i'll be stuck with my parents cuz cbf renting lol.

Tl;DR - im doing commerce.

I'd definitely go to Otago and stay in a hall for your first year. Get in on all kinds of crazy sluzza action, if you stay in like a good one. Staying at home with parents while at uni would suck. Have you applied though it's probably like time to be applying for all that kinda stuff.

Id have thought a hall would be like school all over lol. Read a news article that they banned porn and limited drinks and had 9'0clock bedtime? Im applying next year

Depends on the hall. I think there would be better social life in a hall, you're more likely to get to know more people and they have more social events that are connected to/within the hall (depending on the hall). You can easily find out which ones are the party halls lol, there are definitely ones which are "serious studying halls" too. And ofcourse there is curfew I guess at least some of the time like you cant be rowdy after a certain time or whatever but that's not every night as far as I'm aware. When i was first year there were lots of people complain about not being able to sleep because people having parties in the halls (so idk?).

I dont actually know as I didn't go into hall as I moved here with mcmass. But even if you dont like it it's only for a year then you can move out?

Yeah going into a hall is good idea if you dont know anyone that will be down there and the money isnt a concern as they are hugely overpriced compared to flatting (in dunedin anyway, as its cheap to rent there). Im sure you mummy will pay tho br0.

Obviously I didnt go to hall there but thats coz I was hard c*nt and can adapt to any environment and I already had connections there anyway and just make some new mates and find new bitches to root easily because I was aesthetic god. But in your case halls are necessary to build social base and basic social and life skills that you will require in subsequent years

man this thread depresses me, im current in Nelson doing construction labouring before head off on a working holiday to Canada. Love doing new things and working in the sun but my payslip makes me cry. For the last 3 years I was in Christchurch in the recruitment industry and I fucking hated it but the money was ridiculus good when things where chugging along, best week was $2500 into my account worst was $400 lol. Any thing over 1k I was contempt but the pace was too much in the end. When I come back to NZ im going to do some soul searching and find a new career path more my pace, maybe even start my own thing.

Working for a mechincal installation company you could earn a lot, but the hours are harsh. All you need to know is how to weld more or less. If your interested PM will send you contact details. Will need welding cerficates.

  • 3 weeks later...

Apparantly IT is good industry to get into even in nz (well it was anyway, unsure if it still is). f*ck that tho unless you massive nerd

IT technical work isnt great which is what i started out doing.

gets good once you get into project management/management/solutions/sales etc same as any field make more managing/selling shit than you do actually making or fixing it. eg I wouldnt have a clue how to fix most computer problems and cbf anyway thats what the outsource philipinos are for

its legit once you find a specialisation or industry and work your way up from there

im in that 'technical' boat right now lol... when i ran my own software dev business worked not that much most of the time (like 10 hrs a week at most) and was on an easy 50k not much by this threads standards but i was living a happy life gym / work / go out do whatever i want when i want. sold all the good contracts off when i went army, afterwards went off to big company become another cog in the machine. slowly moving up the chain but still in technical field.. 40k with insurance benefits i still get by i guess with some work on the side so im ok for now but hours are shit. can't wait to either jump to a more fulfilling senior tech role or get through to middle management (looks like the best balance for high pay / life balance because they just delegate their work away and enjoy life lol).
