Elbow injury - not sure what is or what to do

About 2 months ago  while training shoulders a friend told me "your doing it all wrong" and had me bend my arms at the elbow while doing side arm raises. i didnt hear a snap crackle or pop but the following day my elobow upper forarm and lowwer tricep were painfull and it didnt go away. there is also a little pain in the elbow joint when i fully extend as if i was pointing at something.

uncomfortable doing back hand motions, hammer curls, and bicep curls almost to the point of pain.

physio thought it might have started from mal alignment of the back and got me in for a few back craking sessions but that didnt help so i ditched him - bloody witch doctors....

anyone have this before ? after a month off over Xmas it seems a bit better but i can still feel the twinge hessitant to work it hard for fear of making it worse again

advice?

Is it on the inside or outside of your elbow? I have had inflamation in my elbow a few times and was diagnosed with tennis elbow which turned out to be inflamed ligaments. I did what the others have suggested eventually and went to a second physio who used a mixture of manipulation and accupuncture to cure it and havent had any issue since. Often you need to see a sports physio as many physios really have no idea about what to do with sports people.

Thanks guys, i have been working around it for a month or so and it seems to be getting better slowly - i have made sure i have more omega3 in my diet to help combat inflammation.

still feel it on hammer curls a bit and close grip bench - and of course back handng the sock drawer closed

might just be an issue of time  more carefull with weights and trying to go too hard too fast now

I don't have any advice in terms of the injury itself, sorry. But re the physio - some are a waste of time, and some are absolute gold. It might be worth trying another one. Maybe we can recommend a good one. Where are you based, Keto?

South aucks bud - generally seen lurking round Allan Brewster gym in Papatoetoe

Yeah sports doctor, or go to a GP and ask who you need to be referred to (specialist/sports doctor), the specialist will check it and maybe recommend scans or give you a cortisone shot or something and possibly more physio... but then the physio might have a bettter idea rather than just a physio diagnosing the issue (possibly wrongly)

Agree totally with this.. over the years I have seen many many physios.. Most are a complete and utter waste of time.. I find good ones are rare. They more often than not, give you lots of silly exercies to do that more often than not inflame the issue...

And as I have said to them, I struggle to fit my cardio, weights, rotator cuff exercies, stretching and boxing work outs in as it is, now you want me to add all these other exercises in to the mix????

The thing I find works far better for me is hands on manipulation and massage...

There is a Chinese clinic in our area and people have been having great sucess with their methods.. They spend a good half hour massaging the affected area, depending on issue of course..

ie: cant massage to fix a torn rotator cuff.

Then they spend a while on the small electric shocks in the affected area. T

Then finish with a heat pad..  I have had brilliant results.. Every one I have recommended them to have had great results. And they dont charge a cent for ACC clients.  And the best thing of all, no appointments. Walk in off the street any hour they are open and they'll accomdate you.. Awesome service.

They are on the North Shore, Auckland.  I'll find out their name and address if anyone is interested..

grrr, now I got golfers elbow
getting massages and taking naproxen helps it settle down. One good work out at the gym and it flares up before I can get through my work out..
Going to take a week off doing any top half stuff, keep up the massages, naproxen then very slowly introduce top half work outs, starting off very lightly one week and upping weights every week to see how I go...

Open to any other suggestions....

Damn injuries...

I have been struggling with both a dore elbow and forearm.

The elbow limits me in bench presses and close grip and the forearm limits me in pullups and some bicep curls.

I have found the only eay to work with it is ibuprofen to limit the pain post workout and l got an elastic elbow bandage. It is now slowly improving but it has taken me a long time to learn how to manage it.

just a thought for you guys.. Always worth seeing the doc for a cortizone.. Cortizone's have worked ok for me for shoulder issues, but I havent had success with cortizone injected in to elblow area...
Might work for some one else though..

And a last thought.. If getting a cortizone inject, dont be a dumb ass like me.. Take it bloody easy for the first few days... I had one in my shoulder and went hard the next day due to no pain.. Tore a rotator cuff tendon.... Keep it light for the first couple of days training..

My advice is to research physios you want to see.... ask around... find a specialist for your injury. If you don't have anyone who can give you inside info (not just a "yeah this physio helped me") then you can usually do this by looking up clinics, physio schools or hospitals in your area and looking at individual physios credentials, specialisms, research areas, qualifications etc. Then you can book or request an appointment with them - or email them directly to request one.

A good physio should be realistic and informative about your injury, possible outcomes and treatment plan.

It's important to get a good diagnosis - I had wrist issues for a long time that were misdiagnosed by inexperienced physios/practitioners. Now I know that it is an issue with a cervical disc I have made sure to see an experienced physio who specialises C-spine and I can definitely tell the difference with the level of service, care and knowledge. If I had placed more importance on the professional I was seeing earlier on I may have had a better outlook long term and a much higher chance of full recovery and a much faster route there.

Most of all recognise that the work comes from you - getting massages etc is all good and will probably help the injury and help with symptoms, but most injuries require rehabilitation exercises, or changes in something that youve been doing (training split, movements, form) that you need to be diligent with, as well as recommendations such as reducing other activities or specific bodyparts in weightlifting - which can be a discipline to follow.

Youve gotta put in the hard yards with the exercises and their advice - even though it can be hard to folllow when you need to give up some training etc - but if you half-ass it you're only cheating yoursefl!

I have found physio's over all to be hopeless..  Descent ones are few and far between..
I have had better luck with Osteopaths..

I would go to a traditional Osteo every time if I had the choice..

Wiki doesnt agree with me though. Just my own findings...
