Pseudonym
Powerlifting: Novice This category is looking for the strongest novice athlete across bench, squat and deadlift for 5RM. This is only open to powerlifting novices (see below for details). The winner of this category takes home a year’s supply of Horleys protein powder! Plus there's a runner-up prize courtesy of NZ Muscle, and just by entering you'll go in the draw to win one of 20 Fitwear vouchers worth $100. How to enter this category:You must post a video set containing the following:Bench press, 5 reps. You may have a spotter help with liftoff. After that, if your spotter touches the bar, the rep doesn't count. To the chest, touch and go, no blatant bouncing (a little momentum is fine).Squat, 5 reps. You must break parallel (hip joint must be below the knees).Deadlift, 5 reps. The knees must be locked and the shoulders back. Each shot of the three lifts must start with weigh-in, and must clearly show the amount of weight you will be lifting. Each shot must follow this procedure exactly:First show the scales with no weight on them. Show that the scales' reading is zero.Next you must stand on the scales in a full body shot. You need to either a) hold a sign with “GYMNATION, {your username}, {current date}” clearly written on it, or b) say the details verbally. The camera must then move to a closeup on the scales so we can clearly see your body weight. Then you move on to do your lift. Prior to performing the exercise, clearly show the amount of weight you are lifting. You must weigh yourself and show the weight lifted in the same continuous shot as the lift, so you'll need a partner to assist you in filming. On squat and deadlift, the camera must be positioned behind you and to one side so we can assess your depth on squats and lockout on deadlifts. You may use a weight belt and wrist straps, but not knee wraps, bench shirt or squat/deadlift suits.Upload your video on Youtube, Vimeo, and post a link it to on this page. When you post your video here, you must also include:Your body weight (if it varies between your videos, your heaviest weight will be taken)The weight for each of your three liftsThe total combined weight of your three liftsThe total combined weight converted to Wilks points, as per this calculator:http://www.powerlifting-ipf.com/fileadmin/data/wilkscalc.htmYou may post as many video sets as you like throughout the competition, and the earlier you post them, the more time you have to get advice from people and make improvements. (Also the more time you have to correct in case you don’t meet all the rules.)You must have posted your video set by 10pm, Sunday 1st December. This category is ONLY open to athletes who haven't signed with a powerlifting federation, and have not competed in more than one competition previously (and at no higher than Novice level). This category is open to both men and women. The winners will be determined using Wilks points to calculate everyone’s relative strength. Please read the Gymnation Summer Challenge general rules as well. holdenman
Awesome comp Pseudonym *clapping*Just to clarify, are knee sleeves acceptable?
Pseudonym
Um... I dunno. What do you powerlifters think? Are knee sleeves still considered raw? Do they add much more to your lift?
Leeroid
Na no knee sleeves could be wraps if phone quality is bad enough and u wouldn't be able to tell
Phedder
Knee sleeves are considered raw in most federations, they add nothing to the lift, more just provide warmth to the joint to help avoid ache. I think it'd be hard for wraps to look like sleeves, but I suppose if the quality is bad enough it's possible. Easy enough to warm up with them and take them off for the lift, though I compete in mine. If the lifts are done in competition (such as NZPF Raw nats at the end of the month) you can guarantee they're not wraps, or else you'd be disqualified. Optimass
Na no knee sleeves could be wraps if phone quality is bad enough and u wouldn't be able to tellThis ...IMO just allow wraps - people say they add % to the bar but IMO I can squat raw what I do raw plus - I just prefer not to risk injury. holdenman
Na no knee sleeves could be wraps if phone quality is bad enough and u wouldn't be able to tellAhh.. If you have to film the whole thing from weighing in to lifting the bar in one continuous go, could you not just also film yourself putting the sleeves on too? Pseudonym
Let's just keep it simple. Yes, you can wear knee sleeves, but if there's any doubt about whether they're sleeves or wraps, you'll need to film another set where it's clearer. jimmybro1
I would be keen to compete as a novice but as I have done a Novice competition before I am unable to compete here as a Novice? Would prefer to do volume work rather than 1RM especially since I'm coming back from injury.

Campbell101
for deadlift do we have to reset after every rep or in bouncing to a degree allowed?

Dinahlady
Rules now changed to include Novices... Go for it, Jimmybro.Wicked will get some lifts in this weekend coming on film. So only one novice show before allowed? Not 2 novice shows?
Pseudonym
That's correct. I think that is fair for this comp, though. If you have competed on more than one occasion, you aren't really a novice any more.
Rxx
Pseudo, can you answer Azides question. I was also wondering this but assumed you ment wrist wraps for benching.
Pseudonym
Azide - that's correct. We had allowed those wrist straps in the NZBB Strongest Bodybuilder competition, so I figured we'd have the same rules here. Unless our powerlifting experts recommend otherwise? Rxx
Seems a bit weird allowing straps but not allowing knee wraps. Are wrist wraps allowed when benching?
jimmybro1
Does seem odd being allow to use straps although I don't think it helps much unless your grip is average. Surely wirst wraps are allowed.
AZIDE
seeing as its been 10 days since this comp started i think pseudonym should stop changing the rules and just stick to something. IMO its stupid to ask powerlifters opinion here (in the novice lifts section) as:a) anyone serious about powerlifting wont be competing in the novice section as they arent allowed.b) 5RM isnt powerlifting anywaypeople may have already got videos so its stupid to keep changing the rules regarding what is allowed for the actual lifts while the competion is underway, and it just encourages people to whine about the rules rather than actually get and post vids. majorflavazz
After watchin so many powerlifting videos on youtube i would think you wouldnt use straps otherwise you mite aswell wear equipment, equipment helps with your lifting numbers and so would straps if you cant lift the weight with your bare hands.Sticking to raw would be better imo just wearing belt and wrist wrapsIs the benchpress and deadlift touch and go? And would benchpress be full lockout every rep or can you have a slight bend in the elbows at the top?And squats do your knees have to be fully locked out every rep or can they have a slight bend ?
