Mr New Zealand Title Holders

My original question...

Where can you find a list of past NZ national bodybuilding champions?(overall winners) Does it even exist? Would be cool to look back through the years to see whos held the title.

Reckon there should be an honours board somewhere to recognise their achievement.

Nate is doing an awesome job of putting this list together Cheers man it is long overdue in my opinion and if any one can fill in the gaps please share

I know I've said this before but I believe its really important we remember who were recognised as the top bodybuilders for each year for many reasons but mostly because they worked bloody hard to win the title and deserve the recognition but also as a historical record to look back on and to add to.

I also said it would be great to see some pics or vid of our nations best winning in their respective year/s. I have seen, photographed but mostly videod my fair share of national champs since the early 90's and am slowly sifting through some of the old VHS etc to see what Ive captured will post up some footage as I get round to it. If any of you can add any pics vids that would be awesome.

I am presuming it's ok to share these photos but if not let me know and I will take them down.

BJ Johns winning the NZFBB Title in 94

I remember he returned from the states where he was working as a personal trainer to win the title beating a very large Hugh Willis 113 kg

He weighed 93 kg

Victor Richards guest posed that night.

I did this Nationals and a couple of years later was living in sydney training with BJ, he was a great great guy and very helpful. IMO though he wasn't better on that night than Hugh Willis and the guy who was best in that comp from top to bottom and front to back was the u90 champ Wyndon Laumoli. That was a big big show.

Yeah I agree and Hugh's face told all when it was announced. Was an awesome show even had TV3 coverage.

I was actually watching you last night competing in a very tough line up with guys like Mike D and Mike K (98 nzfbb Nats) have several videos with you in them remember seeing you at many shows throughout the 90's great genetic shape big delts :pfft:

I'll post up some Mike D pics next.

Yeah Hugh went backstage and launched his trophy into the wall and walked out with his trunks on into the car park lol... was kind of amusing. My Cousin won the juniors that year and Chris Chase second with Mike D third. I was second to Zane Nash in the novice heavyweights.

The 98 Nationals, Mike D won the u90s, he looked good at that show but I am pretty sure I looked better ha ha ha ha ha I remember feeling ripped off!!

MIKE DEBENHAM

Here's some shots from his victory in 1998

Remember watching and thinking what a tough lineup his class was and then he went on to beat the over 100kg winner in the overall lineup.(I think from memory it was the guy Allsop-Smith but correct me if i'm wrong) Welldone Mike

MICHAEL KINGSNORTH

Mike’s story is a good one. He is a battler and certainly an inspiration for the youth of the sport.

He started as a really skinny kid and has certainly done his time in the weight room to construct his physique.

He has not always been at the top of the heap either and has had his share of high and low placings but at the end of the day he battled his way to the top to take out NZ’s most prestigious title in 2006.

After being awarded his Pro card Mike has gone on to compete in several Pro shows.

O.K Lets delve right back into the past for another legend;

Allan "Al" Hobman (23 April 1925 – 21 September 2008) was a New Zealand professional wrestler, trainer and promoter. Hobman was one of the first homegrown stars to emerge from the Dominion Wrestling Union, and later Steve Rickard's All Star-Pro Wrestling, during the 1960s and 70s such as Tony Garea, Peter Maivia and The Sheepherders. Hobman twice won the NWA New Zealand Heavyweight Championship from John Da Silva in 1960 and Steve Rickard in 1964 with a combined reign of nearly 6 years as champion. He and Rickard were also the first New Zealand Tag Team Champions.

Prior to wrestling, Hobman had a successful athletic career playing rugby union at Rongotai College as a lock for Oriental Rongotai as well as a professional bodybuilder winning both the Mr. Australasia and Mr. New Zealand bodybuilding competitions in 1951.

Allan "Al" Hobman

Cheers for that impt historical info it inspired me to do look for more. This info taken from Dominion Post Obituary

Mr Hobman was 110 kilograms of sculpted muscle. Not a gram of flab loitered on his frame – but it had taken discipline to get there. As a lightweight lock for the Oriental-Rongotai club, he had been regularly targeted and each Saturday was leaving the paddock in worse order than the previous weekend. A pal urged him to start training with weights so he'd be able to foot it with players 40kg to 50kg heavier.

The regime worked. A new Al Hobman emerged. He was no longer a bruised loser, but he would forgo the game of rugby when, by the early 1960s, the attraction of being paid to wrestle prevailed.

Importantly, he had stuck with weight- lifting, and it paid other dividends. In October 1951, he won the New Zealand body building title in Christchurch by taking the best back, best chest, best arms and muscular physique sections.

His routines with weights became an important part of his life and continued, with modifications, into his retirement years.

Personally I liked Mike D's physique the best

Had some really good lines with some decent size without being to over the top mass monster the way it went there for a few years (well pros at least)

The 2000 line up in Welly was pretty awesome, pitty Justin didnt comepete due to the "broken toe"

Would of been interesting to see how the judges scored that

STEPHEN LYNCH

The 1993 NZFB Mr NZ

I remember he used to come into the gym as a supplement rep for Nutra life. He had an awesome set of calves. He had a very balanced and polished physique. I think after the Nats he had achieved his competitive bodybuilding goals and retired.

He was presented the title by Mr Universe Terry Mitsos.

JUSTIN RHYS

One of our most well known Nr NZ title holders is Justin 'Bigkiwi' Rhys.

He was a teenage Mr NZ and returned in 1999 to win the overall title of NZFBB Mr NZ at a very young age of 21 (Maybe the youngest ever winner)

I have followed Justin's progress from the beginning and he always turned heads at comps but I’ll always remember at the Wellington’s Strongest arm comp even Flex Wheeler took a double take.(Flex was guest posing that night a week after his Arnold Classic win) To be fair Justin’s shoulders and calves were sticking out half a mile.

Here are some pics I took at the 99 Nats
