Weightlifting Shoes

Stink to see bro :( Ive got an old school pair of adidas lifting shoes and they are still going strong. Bought them for 50 bux from Hayden Kumerich and they have been probably the best investment lifting wise I have made. Simon weaver has a similar pair and he bought them brand new and still uses them some 10 years on!

When you go looking for a new pair I would either go all out and buy some adistars or some of the nike romaleos(sp), little pricey but they should last a helluva lot longer than six months. Or grab a pair from the QWA site, I know steak and Big John have a pair of the original ones and they are still holding up while a few of the other crew members have their new model and they look sweet. Cheap as chips too!

True! Yeah I want some that'll last

Yeah ideally I'll have a really good pair for comp use, and one I can bash about a bit in training. If I can't get the Risto(s) repaired, I'll look at some cheapy QWAs for training, and maybe the Adistar for comp use. However the Do-wins are tempting as a training shoe, SamuelNZ on here has a pair and they are rugged-looking buggers  Wee bit more to land here than the QWAs though...

Probably purchase Adistar straight up though, then look at a second later on

Any idea where the best place to get them from is? I think I had a bit of trouble finding them last time.. (Adistar or even the Nike one)

Sweet cheers bro! Had a quick squiz, Romaleos seem to be well-liked, as do the cheapy Adidas ones (will have a search for Adistar elsewhere as they don't appear to stock em).

Shipped, the Adidas ones by themselves are about $180NZD, pretty good price for a throw around training shoe!

The Romaleos, by comparison, are $310NZD! (shipped)

The heel of the Romaleo sounds interesting, probably more durable than wood, but would need to hear more about what the compression of the heel is like compared to a wood sole. People say they are heavy which in my books is a huge plus - any extra stability in the squat is a bonus, and heck even for the bench where a twitch of the heel can cost ya (aye MT?!). Only real negative I read was the sole couldn't be re-done like a normal rubber-sole, so once it's done, it's done? Maybe a bit of a longevity thing here... but I guess if you ONLY wear them in the gym, and eventually ONLY wear them for comps, this risk would be minimized. The back of the heel looks better than the Ristos for wrapping, too.

Unfortunately shipping them together doesn't seem to bring a cheaper rate :( So that means it's just as good to buy each one as I get the money.

Phed, if you're reading it also means it will be no cheaper to go in on this one together unfortunately. Kinda good though, you can go in when you've got the funds and vice versa (unless we find a different site to buy from?)

May hint to the parents about an xmas present... ask them to pay for shipping? :pfft:

Id have to say my CEH brand shoes (QWA/UGE) have lasted longer than your Ristos here bro...just starting to get the heel damage now from wrapping.

you referring to the old style "lace up" CEHs bro?.

if so in the same boat as you, had them for well over a year now and still in decent condition. minus the sole parting away at the heel (due to bench setting up. can be fixed by just glueing) i would rate this a a good entry lvl/novice lifters choice as a 1st heeled shoe, not overly expensive, seems to have a decent lifting life...the only negative thing is the that they dont look overly flash  8) but get the job done

Edit: scratch that didnt read properly. Iam referring to the QWA lace up shoes

Yeah must say I'm not surprised, I'd expect a good couple of years out of a specialist shoe like this. Never, ever been worn outside, only in the squat rack, lifting platform, and to/from the pisser :pfft: Oh and bench, but that's only when I'm too lazy to take my shoes off before the session ends...

But it is good to hear that there are shoes that will stand up to wrapping, and I'd hazard a guess that your legs/heels are put under a bit more strain than mine when they get wrapped :)

Yeah, TT said above a few guys were wearing them. Tempted to just give em a try, they're only $180 landed. Have heard nothing but good things about the Romaleos too, another hundy or so though...

Just checked out a few sites, this one for adiStar... $400 landed at today's exchange rates

Let's hope the yanks have it a wee bit cheaper!

All good, after looking around a bit more the QWAs are looking like the best option for me anyway. Just found another place that stocks them and have emailed to see if they can ship to NZ cheaper than the QWA site will.

Haha I wish, I've already been told I'm getting an IOU this year :pfft:

Sorry not following?

Yeah I'd say if they are the same cost (or within $10-20) of the Nikes, I'll grab em. If they work out cheaper (shelf price is already, will depend on shipping...) then it's a no-brainer. Have heard nothing but good stuff about the adiStar and it's quality.

Haha I wish, I've already been told I'm getting an IOU this year :pfft:

My Dad is powerlifting with me at the mo, so I'm sure he'll be sympathetic to my plight :shifty:

i saw alot of the lifters at NIs sporting these

G17563.jpg

So they're quite widely used for powerlifting in NZ then?

That's strange, as I was reading a review for them and both the review and comments mentioned that because the heel isn't wood, there can be issues with slight compression and not feeling as solid/stable as a weightlifting shoe should when the weights get up there.

keep in mind you need a complete flat sole for IPF

Shoes or boots

© The underside must be flat i.e. no projections, irregularities, or a doctoring from the standard

design.

I think this means a flat sole all the way along the shoe?

Very true, are you referring to the adiStar? I always just assumed they were widely used in competition... could be talking outta my arse! I'm pretty sure Quigley at The House had a pair, or it could've been the Ironworks I guess...

if thats true bro then Miles shouldve got pinged for them at gear check at NIs. he used a pair not that i really care tbh.

and ive seen afew of the lifters use them at novice comp (although the gear checks a slightly laid back more..note to self bring in multiply bench shirt nxt novice  )

Should of heard the refs bickering about satekis suit, how the sewn up straps looked longer than 3cm and if they should pull him up for it. If you didnt catch it in the gear check then tough tits!

bro....we both know it was "ref" singular  im jus sayin

in b4 shitstorm

nah no shitstorm intented, just pointing out that there was more interest from one referee which is fair enough i guess, if they were gonna pull him up for it they should of right away. it was a valid point he/she brought up. but like TT said he was geared check like everyone else and passed so, yea....im not sure as to the rules in that situation.

Just stumbled across this site - http://www.maxbarbell.com/collections/w ... ting-shoes

One model for 79.99USD - 150ish NZD shipped.

One model for 69.99USD - 135ish NZD shipped.

Reviews are pretty good. They have a few other models too but very limited sizing options.

Anyone else interested in these? Combing shipping does reduce the price, 2 pairs of the white shoe came to 120NZD shipped per pair. I've spent far too much time looking lately and can't find cheaper, or even comparable prices with a decent review.

Split these posts out of the review thread, just tryna keep it tidy so we can continue the discussion in here :)

Ahh I've heard of those ones, looked over them when I first went into buying some shoes. Just heard the heel could compress a bit under heavier load? No real biggy but I preferred to plump for a slightly more expensive shoe (lotta good that did me! :pfft:)
