Will future generations have 'defective' genes?

Recommended Posts

I don't think we can pass adaptations on. If we did, then it becomes evolution. So, in my opinion (and that's all it is really) I think the article is a bit off. Like yes, there could come a time where medicine stops us from dying and we can only die in an accident, buuuuuuuuut, I don't think we're gonna pass on anything like that to the next generation. If any adaptation is passed on, it would be adaptation to fucken technology, but that's already happened haha.

But who knows, it's just an opinion and we can only wait and find out, but I wouldn't go as far to say that makes them 'defective'.

I wonder how Germany would be like today if Hitler had been able to carry out his plan of creating a superior race, namely selective breeding, over an extended period of time, at least three or four generations. Breaches a lot of ethical issues but a lot, nearly all we know about hypothermia was obtained by live human testing on prisoners and Jews to prevent German soldiers dying in the cold. Also I believe (I may be wrong), steroids were first used by the Nazis to develop a super soldier. Not that I am saying what Hitler did was right but if you disattach yourself from empathy towards individuals, it can be beneficial for the entire human race, especially a few generations down. Think 90% of people fit, much lower rates of disease.

SUAS did you even read the article?

it isnt wrong at all. it says people who once would have died in harsher conditions due to their shit genetics are being kept alive with medicine and other technology and are passing on their shit genes to their children, and basically fucking the human gene pool

yes, I read it. I guess I just don't understand it, because I really don't see how it's fucking with the gene pool. Everyone passes their genes on to their kids, so I don't see how medicine changes it? I'm really fucking confused

often members of a species with poor genetic traits will die before they get a chance to breed and pass on their shit genetics.

the situation we are in now as a species, is that individuals with poor genetics are being kept alive by medicine and technology, which means that they get a chance to have kids and pass on inferior genetic traits to their children when in the wild/under harsher selection pressures they would have died long before they could breed.

making any sense?

Ahkay. But generally, genetic diseases USUALLY occur mid-late life so they would have probably had children anyway, that's how I was seeing it. Shit happens, people should be able to experience life.

I would rather be aborted at birth when I have no consciousness rather than 'experience life' with a disability.

Hmmm I tend to agree with this. The fact that we can basically negate the survival of the fittest through medicene and technology means that more and more undesirables are coming through the gene pool. All obese people should be castrated (semi srs)

But the ability to become obese was necessary in the early days when humans were unable to store food. Fat contains more calories per gram than muscle so more bang for the buck. I think it was more a case of survival of the fattest lol although you wouldnt have been able to get fat if you were not fit in the first place.

Since mankind started practicing medicine we've been ruining our gene pool.

I'd have likely died of appendicitis if it hadn't have been cut out when it got infected.

I would have likely walked off a cliff, I'm blind as a bat without my contacts

You mean much like the slave days and African-Americans? They would get the biggest strongest fastest etc to have kids to have better slaves in the future. Look at the avg black guy today and they are generally very well built without having to do much to work at it.

Not all of it is necessarily about dying before reproducing either. If you have unattractive features or a disability, you stand a lot less chance of securing a mate. An asymmetrical face indicates a higher chance of respiratory problems, which is why humans find a symmetrical face more attractive. Bad breath is indicative of sinus infections and unhealthy teeth, you naturally dont want to make out with someone with halitosis. Crooked teeth means you are more likely to develop dental problems so you dont find people with crooked teerh attractive. In the past, these things werent able to be fixed but nowadays, they can be cured or at least masked, meaning they will secure a mate, but when they produce offspring, there will be a higher chance of problems as things were only treated at the surface level and not the actual genetics.

The above post is merely talking from an instinctive point of view directly related to survival. Of course in these civilised times, there are other factors that will determine your attractiveness.

Have you seen Gattaca? It deals with exactly this issue. Set in a future where social class is determined by good genes, and those with crap genes are "in-valids" and only allowed to be cleaners and rubbish collectors.

It was written and directed by a Kiwi too - Andrew Niccol. He also wrote The Truman Show, and specialises in these make-you-think sci fi stories. Very cool movie.

Diversification is the one thing that will save the human race when a pandemic strikes (I am Legend, 28 Weeks Later etc). I'm not sure who ITT considers themselves part of the genetic elite either...

I wonder if black peoples tendency to have big sausages are from their orgies where the guy with the longest banana was most likely to have their seamen conceived. The one with the longest and highest glans ridge would displace more of their competitors seamen and while also depositing their own sailors further up where they couldnt be displaced by shorter dongs.
