Good post Nate, but Frank Zane was actually a 3 time Mr Olympia, I think 77, 78 and 79

Ooops your dead right - was thinking Franco!

Yeah ummm Franco won it twice...

maybe you were thinking Chris Dickerson? Oh he won it once... lol

Maybe I should shut the f*ck up?! :pfft:

Here's where I was thinking tho - Arnold (aesthetic king that he was  ) won in 1970 thru 1975 and then again when he made his comeback in 1980 (though someone else probably deserved that Sandow! ).

Franco won in 1976 & 1981, (1972, 1973 2nd, 1974 1st LW, 1975 1st LW)

Zane won in 1977 thru 1979 (competed 1972, 1974 thru 1976 placing 2nd, then 1980, 1982 2nd, 1983)

Dickerson won 1982 (2nd 1980-81).

Moral of the story - A GOOD (Aesthetic?) BIG MAN wil always beat a good small man!

Now I can shut the f*ck up in peace!

lol @ big tom...in b4 mod edit!

I think a lot of you guys are so deeply involved in the bodybuilding world that you have kind of lost touch of what average Joe and Jane Bloggs on the street thinks of as aesthetic.

The 99% of people who aren't involved in bodybuilding would rather look like zyzz then like a pro BBer...Most people think huge muscle monsters are freaks, not aesthetic at all.

Example: 60kg guy I know who doesn't lift but has a 6 pack through fast metabolism- gets lots of comments from girls etc.

Aesthetic = purely subjective, and the BBer definition of aesthetic is wildly different to Joe Bloggs definition of aesthetic.

If you want to say Cutler or whoever is "aesthetic"... no. Incredibly successful bodybuilder, but to the average joe they will think he looks ugly as f*ck.

It sucks but what can you do about it? Personally I think if your goal is to look aesthetic as opposed to being a BBer then what is wrong with that?

It only becomes gay when it has all the attention-seeking, zyzz-imitating, nuthugging, miscing type shit that is associated with it.

That shit gets old pretty fast...

I've just removed the last few posts that were off-topic, and getting too personal. Remember, this isn't about any one person. Let's get back to Loochi's original question:

Is 'aesthetics' the new thing now? Or was it always there but now it's more emphasized..?

What's your take? Interesting topic imo!

The only difference between the aesthetics of a bodybuilder and non-bodybuiler is the area of focus...for bodybuilders its the symmetry and proportion of the entire body...for non-bodybuilders its limited to the waist up......for porn stars the area in between lol

I entirely disagree bro. I'm a non bodybuilder yet I strive for proportion, symmetry, definition of my entire body. I just don't understand why someone would overlook there lower half. It's just incomplete. Even for beach heads, a set of raging calves never go astray

Personal preference, everyone has a different view & there's nothing wrong with that.

I always qualify my statements by referring to bodybuilding aesthetics. I mean in truth I don't even care why people train or what look they strive for. Long as they aren't using something I want to use or aren't directly getting my involved in what they are doing I just figure to each their own.

The bonus of the new wave.. (and it's an old wave really) is that when you can't find a single machine to use or a bench, the squat racks are usually always empty.

Something you all may be forgetting.. when getting into weightlifting/bodybuilding no matter what your goals, provided you remain lean you are going to have the fitness model / beach body look first, before getting bigger and looking like a bodybuilder, then eventualy a freak

Good call bro.

I vote we change Aesthetic Crew's name to "Apprentice BBer Crew".

I'm thinking they should bring the big boys protein shakes and unload plates until they earn their patch! :pfft:

So sad and so true. I always think "Whoa. Awesome." When I see someone in the rack but then I'm like, "Wait, I want to use it!"

Sorry, let me buy a quick rant...

I just stumbled on this thread. If by aesthetics you mean a bodybuilder like Frank Zane... ok, cool... go right ahead... you're impressive.

But if you're one of these 70 or 80kg children with low bodyfat who has to go round showing off his abs like people are supposed to be impressed... please grow up. Airhead females might be hanging off you, but you're nothing impressive. If you have a body that can be acheived via dieting and doing press-ups in your bedroom, and you're happy with that... fine, but you're not worthy of applause.

I looked at some of the pics on the NZ Aesthetics facebook... what a joke. If you're happy being that way, go right ahead. But you're not an athlete, you're not strong, you're not freaky... no need to flatter yourself.

I don't understand this crap. There was a post I saw calling Derek Poundstone 'strongfat'. More like 'strongsnapyourneckandflexhisabs'.

Sorry, I'm bored at work.

lol at Wookie

hit the nail on the head, I can't stand thes 70 something kg douche bags walking round like they are some kind of big shot coz they have a little 6-pack. Some kid on there was asking for cutting advices because he wanted to be ripped for summer, he had the physique of a 12 year old malnourished ethiopian.

these guys are the kind of idiots lifting for the wrong reasons, i.e. to try and pull chicks.

lol you're such an arrogant f*ck.

who are you to define what are the right and wrong reasons for lifting?

its about motivating people to become BETTER than the 70kg with abs they are now. its about pushing people up, not bringing people down.

also lol @ wookie. i'm 5'11 83kg.. started at 58kg. you think i could have done that with pushups and a diet :/?

no hate man, but i went from 85kg-90kg doing only pressups, 14kg dumbell curls, situps and lifting 40kg bins of fish. i know your question was rhetorical, but yeah i think what you said that i quoted would be acheivable
