cara2011
Hi Ladies,I'm a tad worried. I haven't had my monthlies in almost a year now.Although it has been fab not having to worry, I'm concerned about the long term effects.I'm wondering whether it has something to do with my b/f level?I'm 5 '10 and 64kg.My BMI is at the lower end but still in the healthy range ( not that you can gage health from this) I run 6/7 days a week, more like 7 and work a fairly physical job. Lift free weights and do yoga. I do stick to a mainly low fat diet but incorporate good fats on a regular basis, such as salmon, avocado, almonds and at least once a week have a major blowout ( go to town on the bread with lashings of butter and treats galore )I eat around 2000 cals daily and often more if I have to work late shifts.I have maintained this weight for 10 months now. Infact, I have hardly fluctuated at all.Do you think this issue is diet related? I'm just a bit worried cause I would hate to develop osteoporosis or it may be a sign of something more serious. Thanks a mil
Sheta
Sounds like you need a visit to a really good doctor! Mine was missing for years (late teens - early 20s).... and an internal scan discovered my ovaries had shut down completely. I was told I would never have children, and was immediately put on hormones : 18months of wearing patches with no result. For some reason my bod kicked into gear by itself & now I'm a mum of 2! newgirl83
Wow, that's great Sheta! Cara, you aren't alone chick! Gosh I'm glad it's not just me, I havn't had one in about 10 months. I had come off the pill so I figured it was that, but doc said it should've come back by now. So had a blood test, and hormone levels all normal. He said putting on weight would help it come back, I'm 60 kg 5'7 and like you, I do a lot of running - so your doc may tell you the same thing as you are quite light for your height. Go and see your doctor and get a blood test. Good luck.Haven't had as many sick days tho :pfft:
cara2011
Thank you both so much for your advice!! I am getting onto the Doc right away and should hopefully have some answers soon.Great to hear that you both have been in similar positions and Sheta, having such a positive outcome despite what the pros said.Newgirl83- Have you been prescribed any hormone treatment or anything or just simply told to gain alittle weight? For me, it's the not the gaining that is going to be a mission, it's the mental side of things. I'm quite comfortable maintaining where I am, and my energy levels aren't effected in the slightest.. and no crampy days either lol. Fingers and toes crossed! jimjim83
You left it a year then asked on a bodybuilding forum? Go see your DR!
Chloee
You definitely need to see a doctor!!!! There are so many things that could be causing it, and yes there are long term health risks such as increased risk of osteoporosis for not getting you period regularly. For me I don't get one unless I am on the pill - due to hormonal issues. Don't leave it another year - get it sorted now
cantygirl
Im no expert but for your bodyweight and calories consumed, I wouldn't think your missing periods would be due to what you are doing. Some ladies lose their periods when they compete due to the bodyfat loss, I have competed for 9 years and have sometimes had my period on the day of the comp, I never have it missing more than 2 months. You are right to be concerned, like you say with the estrogen levels being low, your calcium losses are detrimental to bone strength. Let us know how you get on with your doctor visit. Best wishes. danellaj
will be really interested to see how you get on... I'm the same height as you 5'10 and have been down to 53kg without loosing periods, I think it depends a bit on genetics though.Have you been stressed lately? Our menstrual cycle can shut down in times of extreme stress.Hormones can be balanced very well with herbs, I would avoid synthetic hormone treatment if it were me (having once been put on progesterone and gained 5kg in 3 days as well as becoming bitch from hell) A lot of naturopaths work very successfully with fertility and hormones.good luck
cara2011
So after three different opinions and bloods- the final result= no menstruation due to STRESS... that's what they put it down to.BMI 20.8 so healthy range...bit gutted really. says feck all really. Fingers crossed things will balance one day!

ashleigh9
I think this is a fairly common issue among female body builders. Often times, we don't get enough calories and our tough workouts put our menstrual cycles on hold. I think the biggest short term issue would be if you wanted to conceive right away. I'm not sure about the long term effects, so I recommend going to a doctor if you're concerned. You can find one at LocateADoc.
